  1. 1. Am I setting up my hookah right?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm a new member on here. Just wanted to introduce myself. DJ K from Los Angeles. Been hookahing for a few years no... the sh*tty way. Been buying cheap hookahs/ cheap coals... not knowing why I never got a good session until now. I don't have an Egyptian hookah yet (but I will get one in the near future). I currently have a 3 footer that does a decent good job... Person I bought it from said he bought it from a hookah bar. Anyway, I just wanted to know if I'm setting my hookah up right. I think I've tried just about every set up from a few coals to more coals, from lots of water with ice to more ice, from small short hoses to long hoses, from shallow bowls to deep bowls and even phunnel bowls. I think I get decent clouds but not compared to some of the videos i've seen on youtube. so here's my current set up:

Bowl: clay, semi-deep, wide.

Tobacco: Starbuzz... sex on the beach , white peach, apple, watermelon, blue mist (my favorite). Never heard about acclimating my tobacco until just now so I'll do that.

Packing: I separate the tobacco little by little and sprinkle it on the bowl instead of sprinkling little chunks. Then i kind of pack it lightly so that it doesn't touch the foil

Foil: regular foil opposed to heavy duty thicker foil. I poke small holes all around the surface (but I read some people only poke holes where the coal sits?) But I rotate the 3 coals around the bowl to evenly heat the bowl.

Coal: Coco Nara (best i've tried so far... I used to use those crappy quick lights and those log looking ones). 3 on the bowl and when it gets small i add a 4th one to keep it going.

Smoke session: about 45- an hour and 15 minutes.

Final result: I get the most amount of smoke at about 30 minutes into it... I'm satisfied with my sessions but wish i could get denser and bigger clouds. I've mastered not getting a burning strong smoke. Always have tons of ice in the base... I feel like i'm ALMOST there but not quite... Don't know what else to try. I've tried putting some milk into it and see a little bit more but not enough as much as I'd like. So...

Am I doing it right? Any other tips?

Oh... and I try and get as much tobacco with the most juice... Not sure if it should be a little dryer or what... Tips and criticism welcome. Thanks for reading.

i'd look into getting a different bowl, perhaps egyptian style or a phunnel bowl. A lot of people here love Coco Nara coals, I have yet to try them, but i have heard they are the best. Branch out on the types of tobacco you use....try Nakhla, which needs a denser pack( it is a bit dryer), and try Al-Fakher which needs a fluffyer pack(usually it's very juicy), also Fantasia hasa good amount of flavors that are all pretty good, it's usually dripping in juices. Use heavy duty foil, and try smoking without ice in the base, try it with different temperatures of water, I usually use room temp water with no ice.

You don't need to acclimate Starbuzzz.. Only really need to acclimate Tangiers, the regular line. But sometimes acclimating other brands will tone down the strongness of a flavor, as is the case with some Nakhla flavors I can think of.

Sounds like you got everything down pretty much... Except I allow the tobacco to touch the foil. For SB I sprinkle it in to above the rim just by a tad, and then press down so it's flush with the rim of the bowl. Apply foil, poke holes all over...

If you want to improve your sessions, watch how-to vids. They help a lot.

And welcome to the forum!

The tobacco touching the foil isn't a bad thing.  When the tobacco does not touch the foil you need more heat to cross the air gap.   I'm sure how big this bowl is, but 3 full coconaras (CCNs) seems to be a little too much heat if you are going to be packing to touch the foil.

As said above, ice doesn't do much besides inhibit the flavor of the shisha.

Make sure every time you mix the shisha before you pack it.  The flavors and liquid separate.  I would suggest to actually pat down the SB especially with a paper towel before you pack it.  It should heat up a little better (may need to back off the coals a little bit) and you should see better clouds as well.  Try breaking the CCNs in halves.  That way you can get way better heat management as CCNs are huge and hot.

As chris said above seems like your doing alright .Coco coals way to go.And packing yeah pack it as stated light for SB and AF ,harder for nak, and mizo nak is better than regular, ive had regular and not mizo but mizo seems to be the consensus

Thanks for the responses and welcomes. I've been loading my bowls with SB that's soaked in the coals cause I thought more juice on the tobacco the better. I'll try patting it down before sprinkling it on. Also I'll try just water without ice this time. I'm determined to get this right! haha. peace guys.
