jdl55
Hello, I've been smoking hookah for several years now. Almost since the beginning I've had the idea to make an electric heating element that would sit on top of the hookah as a sort of coal. No more adjusting coals if they are too hot or not hot enough, simply twist a potentiometer. No more dirty tasting hookah, shisha would just die out slowly. All flavor, no coal taste. The benefits are many. Today I googled around a little bit and found that this does exist, but after reading a few reviews and watching some on youtube, it seems like the device is too small, not hot enough, and theres no way to adjust it. I've decided to try to make my own prototype to liberate myself from charcoal. Does anybody know the temperature range i should be aiming for? I was thinking of buying a cheap coffe mug warmer and taking the heating element out of that, but I've never used one of those before and I don't know if it would be hot enough. After that I think my only option may be to build it from scratch and I don't know if I have the resources to do that right now.

[/quote] i think it's around 200 degrees idle and 400 degrees while pulling. It's not really that simple though since you need to heat and cool the device very quickly. questions
I had this engineer friend of mine tried this idea out..with a coil from an electric stove top...it just wasn't accurate, which was quite upsetting. I think with some time, it can work, just need to have an adjustment to the heating coil. i say keep on trying with some sort of adjustment knob and you will be set.. the idea is great, now just need to execute
Venger
Search the how-to section. This has been discussed quite a bit. I think one guy welded a metal disk to the tip of a soldering iron. Another used the heating element from a toaster. maybe you can succeed where they failed. Most great ideas are achieved by standing on the shoulders of giants. Sariél
If you search, you can find an old discussion about this. I posted some links to buy small heating coils, and some suggestions like a flow activated switch to ramp up the temp, just like a real coal. cymptom
I really hope somebody works this out someday. If smoking hookah no longer involved inhaling burning charcoal, it would probably eliminate most or all of whatever health risks are associated with this kind of smoking. Voliminal
With a friend of mine, we had a small hair dryer to heatup some coals and I saw the heating elemet inside that heats the air as it pulls, and it was red cuz of much heat, and the size was just the size of a hookah egyptian bowl. We haven't tried getting it out and try to smoke. any of you guys done it?
