TheyCallMeDave
Mya qt, box of ch (hookahjohn) coals, and a couple shisha suggestions from the forum members, and your looking at an affordable (and effective) starters kit. The mya qt is a small hookah that smokes like a 40 inch. Its a champ. I know the payout at first can thin your wallet, but after that, once you have your hookah and supplies, your simply restocking. Epoch
Small Mya Saray pipes are great for beginners. http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-187-mini-mya-hookah.html Not a fancy piece, but I use one regularly and it smokes like a champion. Also, durable as can be (plastic vase) and breaks down for easy cleaning.
combs08
Get a QT or Bambino. Size doesn't matter since they smoke as well as my 33 in KM.
TheyCallMeDave
what about something a little bit bigger
I would still recommend the mya hookahs. I own a 36 in. Khalil Mamoon, and I wish I owned a small hookah. I do alot of traveling with it around my college campus, andit's a bitch to lug around. Not only that, but it gets scratched from travel. Get a mya for you and you friends. It'll smoke just as well, trust me. I know, it doesn't seem like it would, but just take our word. When you decide you want a hookah to set next to the couch or on the coffee table, look into a KM. Your description is exactly that of a mya. But, if you're still persistant, check on the trades forum, and see if you can get any good deals on a Syrian or KM pipe from there.

TheCallMeDave knows what he's talking about. Spend some time around the forum and you'll find that most of us own a QT or two in addition to whatever else we might have. They're solid hookahs and my #1 recommendation for first-time smokers. John's coals are also a great recommendation. They're high quality coals at a price that doesn't make you cry everytime you light one up. I'll add this though: don't build a hookah until you can build it right. That means getting a great setup from the start. More specifically, you'll want to get a small Tangiers phunnel and washable hose the same day you get your QT. Even with all of that you're still looking at under $100. Honestly, if you're intersted, send me a PM and I could probably hook you up with a used QT on the cheap. Either way, rocking a QT with a phunnel and Razan bumps you from the "hey bro, let's go score a hookah for the kegger tonight" category of hookah buyers. That's a GOOD thing, btw. Penalty of said ashing is a good ol' fashion shanking with hot tongs, in my book.

Chreees
My friend when I smoke with him takes breaks from smoking hookah to smoke a cig... He uses his tray to ash them.... I just shake my head. It doesn't matter.... they're the same basically. Choose whichever you want.

I placed a pretty hefty order with hookah-shisha, so there ya go. Saves on shippin'. Ha.
