Genie
I know they JUST hit the market but has anybody had a chance to test them out? I ordered a bunch today, hope I don't regret it. They're round, unfortunately, Exoticas have me SO spoiled now. Shishaco nat squares are my favorite squares to use, I just find them a bit pricey. Genie
Yeah, I just realized what he was huhing. I don't read thread titles, I don't know why I expect other people too. I'm referring to the new Shishaco Finger Coals. At least, I think they're new. I've never seen them before now so I figured they were.
Pretty sure. If you do a net search for them you don't find much, at least I didn't. I didn't look REAL hard for them though. Went to Shishaco online and they don't even show them on their site yet.
Genie
Oops, Shishaco DOES show them on their site. Doesn't say much about them in particular though.

Genie
I love Shishaco coals and have had great success with them, so I'm hoping the fingers are as long-lasting. I got used to finger coals awhile back and use them a lot, mainly Diamantes--they took some getting used to though. Using them on small bowls is a pain and I don't bother to try anymore, but they do great on my large Phunnels. Haven't had one get away from me in a long while. The Shishaco finger coals will be here soon enough and I'll get to try them out. I'm happy to have a stockpile of coals for those weird times when I run out of my favorites anyway, and it's not like they go bad, so I guess it's not wasted money. dizzbizz
Haven't tried them, but if they're like all the other finger coals I've used, I'd stay away.
Travis
I like my coals to stay on the bowl....not roll off onto my precious hardwood floors. Never have been a big fan of finger coals. I've tried a few, and they worked dont get me wrong, its just heat management and coal placement became increasingly difficult
Genie
I guess the bargain shopper in me is more forgiving than I realized. I like the nice, big, FAT fingers that burn as long and well as Exoticas but are so much cheaper. I like being able to choose how big I want them. Some of the finger coals aren't round, looks like the Shishacos are though. But, like I said, I can forgive a lot for the right price. Also--for the right burn time. I like heat management with the coals as well so I consider that a plus. Before I got the hang of not letting my fingers roll off the bowl, I'd shave one side of the coals with a serrated knife until I had a flat surface, messy but extremely effective. TheScotsman
finger coals are compressed charcoal dust, just waiting to return to their un-compressed state at the first chance they get - usually all over the floor. They leave me yanking the stem out, and dumping the vase on the floor in an attempt to extinguish them in the shortest fashion possible. (Not that anyone could spot a burn on this horrible-dark-dank-dungeonlike flooring the DA insisted on) Besides, they always have a funky taste.
Um... what brand of finger coals have you tried? I want to make sure to NEVER try them. I've never once had the above problems. And what "formed" charcoals aren't compressed coal dust? There's no natural wood/bamboo/coconut that makes a nice neat square when it's burned into coal that I know of. I've had more popping and exploding squares than fingers, that's for sure. And funny tasting? Nope, have only noticed that with QL squares and rounds. I've had great success with Diamante and Stargate fingers both. There was at least one other finger coal I've tried but I can't remember what they were, don't recall having them explode or taste funny either though. Genie
Just did My Review of these coals as I finally tried them last night. They did great and I feel a lot better about buying four kilos. Considering I only paid $3.75 a kilo, I'm ecstatic with their performance.
Genie
Okay, I've been using these for, I don't know, a couple of weeks now? I really really like them a lot. ESPECIALLY for the price. I discovered that breaking them into fourths instead of thirds worked great, and they really do snap fairly easily although tonight I found I could use my deboning scissors to cut them--worked great and none of them broke up. I cut about five fingers for future use. I cut one in fourths, used three on the bowl and added the fourth about 30 or 40 minutes later to pick up the heat and finish the bowl, ended up having to heat up one more little chunk and got a good hour and a half out of the bowl. These coals are laid out on my large Chinese funnel, by the way. Laying them this way seems to work better on my funnel while the coals are fresh, then I lay them the other way when they get smaller and I want to maximize their heat. 71903DC5
Gppd review. I'm not a fan of finger coals but that price is very appealing.
Genie
With my budget, I have to factor in price as well as quality. $12-$14 a kilo for coals is way outside my budget. By the way, I use Exoticas a lot and these don't ash as much as those either.
