Regal
What's goin' on HookahForum world? This is our first post, so bare with us, we're trying to figure out all the stuff that's going down here. We (two friends) are in the midst of designing a hookah, actually the design is slowly coming to a close, and we are curious about what smokers think about the look of high quality hookahs. We have found that as you move up in quality and cost of a hookah you are, more or less, wrangled into a hookah that is a glossy, metallic, and has an almost gaudy look (i.e. higher end mya pipes). In contrast the pipe we're making has a wooden stem (beetle pine with lots of blue and gray grain) surrounding the down stem with a large but more translucent vase. What do you think? Do you like bejeweled and flashy, or simple and powerful? Be well, Regal
thatonethere
Welcome to the forum! I hope you enjoy your stay. I prefer something simple, elegant and classy. Edited October 18, 2010 by thatonethere
jorlyfish
I'd rather have something a little more sleek. Not even necessarily modern, but just simpler lines and decoration. I also like to see the mechanics of the hookah a little - I want to see the smoke in the vase, etc. If I had the money (and space) I'd love one of those all-glass hookahs. I'd be curious to see the downstem you described...!
Hassouni
Tall, slender, and sleek, as are common in Beirut these days...very plain, straight stems, stainless steel
Epoch
I like my hookahs to be a little gaudy! Painted vases, engravings on the shaft, etc. That being said, functionality is the most important part, and comes before the decorations.
mustafabey
Classic would be the buzz word for me. Bells vases, fairly simple steel stems, hoses with poms poms and carved wooden mouthpieces, tradition materials, clay bowls. I do admire the antique qajar and mughal ones I see for sale from time to time at prices far beyond even my imagination. But one dreams
dizzbizz
I would definitely not consider my Mya Paragon to be flashy or gaudy. I prefer simple and elegant pipes. Too much decoration is an over kill. I like the KM style as well as a silver Mya. But anything with skulls or butterflys on the stem is too much for me. Cp44
Plain and simple, the most important thing is that it smokes right.
Chreees
I value functionality over looks. I prefer traditional looking over modern. I prefer classy (simple) over flashy.
TheyCallMeDave
Other. I would rather spend a pretty penny on a robust, well working, beefy hearted, good stem, and then invest in a beautiful vase. One that truely pleased my eye to the fullest extent. Vases are meant to hold water. And that's it. If I'm going to spend money on asthetics, I want it to be in the vase, not in the stem to substitute performance. rahl071
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but doesn't wood tend to absorb flavors? if so, how well will a pine shaft work? or is there a stainless tube inside?
noodle
I like the vase to be as clear as possible so I can easily fill it to the right level and to see the bubbles. Edited October 20, 2010 by noodle
ih303
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but doesn't wood tend to absorb flavors? if so, how well will a pine shaft work? or is there a stainless tube inside?
I was just talking to a friend of mine from Saudi the other day about wooden hookahs. Weird. Anyway, I've never owned one but he told me they require quite a bit more attention than your standard metal one. Since the wood is porous it soaks up flavors and oils like a sponge. This can limit a wooden hookah to one-flavor (obviously not a problem in the mid-east where DA rules). When they are cleaned it must be done much more thoroughly. From what this guy was saying they smoke fine. Still I don't see myself ever being interested in getting one.
Sapphire
I am in love with My Colossus. It is classy AND flashy. I get a lot of compliments on it during social smokes.
Regal
Holy flying forks batman, how do people keep up with responses? I've never been a big forum person, obviously. First of all, thanks so much for giving us the time of day! Secondly, I will get some pictures of the stem on here post haste. It is wood surrounding a stainless tube, this will help with longevity, and will allow the smoking of whateva flavors you want (something an entire stem made of wood wouldn't really allow). That being said, we are looking heavily into the absorption properties of wood, and lets just say, we are coming out with something made of ebony and never seen before in hookahland ;-) I'll keep y'all updated. I have been amazed at the buzz surrounding wooden hookahs lately; I mention it 'round town and people loose it with excitement...this is a bee ee ay utiful thing! Be Well, Regal P.S I'm going to figure out how to quote properly on here so as I can discuss individual comments, but I'm slow.
