Excellent recipe for group smoke

Recommended Posts

I had a few friends over last nite and this was what we tried; we used about 2/3 King Moassel Double Apple, 1/3 Nakhla Rose, and put apple cider in the base.
It was unanimous between the 4 of us that it was excellent in flavor, smoke and buzz. It worked very well with cold beer. The biggest difference I noticed with using the cider instead of water is that we could inhale the smoke without any discomfort and only one cigarette smoker was in the group. When it did get harsh was when the coal was nearly burnt out.
I am not sure what brand the coals are but I am going back and getting more and will find out. It was just one roll in a plain foil tube. I am not sure what really hardcore hookah folks like, but this is a pretty good recipe for group smoking at least since getting all 3 my buddies and me to agree on something is rare.
Oh, we smoked this in my 17" hookah with a glass vase, aluminum stem, clay bowl setup. Somebody with a really nice hookah should be even more satisfied.

Is there any other kind of cider? lol Apple with anything tastes nice to me. I like the cider idea, just to make it more apply.
That does sound excellent. Every year after the first frost, the cider produced with those apples taste best. When fall/winter starts to roll around, pick up some cider to try in your hookah.
That is good advice. My Dad would marinade briskets in apple cider and I would always get some to drink before he used it all up. It tastes so much better than regular apple juice. Since apples don't grow in Texas I have never been around areas to get fresh apple cider. I never really looked into why cider is better than juice. But this got me to wondering so I found this interesting write up http://www.leeners.com/cider.html and this particular place has info/equipment for making pear and peach as well. The cool thing is this article is on making "hard" cider.
Honestly if I did not have the double apple flavor I would not have thought about the apple cider. I guess a good name for this recipe is the "Triple Apple Rose Cider"   According to the article I need to be looking for wine or hard cider grade juice. I have a really good produce stand nearby that I am going to see if they can hook me up. I will let you guys know if there is any real difference. Some of you may be able to beat me to it, that's okay too.
what is it with rose? it just doesnt taste right, like something i shouldnt be tasting. do people actually eat roses?
I agree to an extent. The rose by itself would not work very well at all. It's like smoking meet with mesquite, oak, hickory, etc. The flavor it adds is good depending on particular taste you have. But eating mesquite, oak, hickory by itself would be pretty nasty. The rose could have been cut down to probably 1/4 and some of the 4 of us may have liked it a little more or a little less. We did not experiment very far.
I am also guessing that the apple cider added quite a bit more apple flavor and if we would have used water the rose may have been a little too much. I have ate meat that had way too smokey of flavor to the point it did not taste good. Finding the ideal balance will take more experimentation.... but I am happy to try

I live in Western NY, about 2 miles from a place that manufacturers their own apple cider.I can tell you, you haven't experienced great cider performance until you get it right from the plant as it comes off the bottler.

have you ever tried "hard" cider? I would like to know how that taste and what the buzz is like (like a wine or beer or liquour buzz) I have never cared much for a wine buzz. Beer and liquor
I have a co-worker that is going to Liberia a couple of years (at least) to work on a contract. We are giving him a going away party so there should be around 15 to 20 people there that will be game on smoking the hookah. I will do a bowl with the rose in the mix and one without and get a vote on what went over best.
I will probably try one with about 1/4 instead of 1/3 and see what reaction that gets if there are enough folks with enough time to go through 3 bowls.
Al Majlis rose is AWESOME. Beautiful. Rose on a black molasses base works much better, too bad almost every company uses pure corn syrup now.
I will have to give that stuff a try.
Well last night was a real bummer as far as the hookah went. We went to a sports bar and I asked the waitress if it was okay to bring a hookah in. She said it was okay since we were only smoking tobacco. Well after I got it setup and we were about 15 minutes into some real good smoke she was sent back over to tell us we couldn't with no explanation. I know we had a whole lot of people coming over to our table and checking it out. I was letting them smell the tobaccos I had brought and everyone that came over thought it was really cool. Almost none of them ever even heard about hookah. Evidently there was something about the distraction that worried management.
Everybody, 16 people including two cute girls that expressed curiousity so we invited them to partake enjoyed it very much. The first and only bowl was 3/4 apple and 1/4 rose. It was nice and I could not really figure out if it was any better or worse from the night before. I really need to make that experiment the same night due to the fact that memory may not hold up that long. Hell, n better than mine is I may need two hookahs to really be certain
Just thinking about smoking Rose makes me queezy. Is it really that good? I think Rose perfume is awesome when girls wear it. I couldn't imagen sitting for an hour and inhaling it
I am not real sure if the fact that almost all of the people in the two groups I smoked this with are new to hookah so maybe it seems to be really good. It's not like we have tried a lot of different flavors. But even an old pro, Tangiers, has at least one brand of rose he thinks is excellent.
At least the brand I have tried seems it would only be good mixed into other flavors. It's like putting seasoning on food to me. It can be too light or too heavy.

But rose isn't a flavor. Its a scent. It's like comming up with Old
Spice tobacco. Or White Diamonds tobacco. It just doesn't seem ok.

Orange, lemon, cols, apple, peach....... Are all flavors. We eat them.
I dont remember the last time I sat down and had a plate of roses. My
damm rabbit I had as a kid would eat roses like mad.

Just dont think I would want to smoke one.

Your sense of smell plays a large part in how you perceive the taste of food, and probably an even larger part when it comes to tasting smoke. I think that's why the floral flavors actually work most of the time...Also, there are many edible flowers and I've seen them sold as snacks

Sorry for the double post, but I looked it up.  Rose petals are infact edible, as are the seed things/fruit called rose hips.  Some species of rosehip are very high in vitamin C.  We put powdered rosehip in smoothies at the place I used to work.

Like I mentioned early on about smoked meats, it adds flavor. I don't know what a mequite tree tastes like, but a mesquite grilled pork chop tastes a lot better than one cooked over plain coal. For whatever reason it just seems to work.

I live in VT and I also live very close to an apple orcard. Hard apple cider is amazing, and not very difficult to make yourself.  Fresh pressed apple ciber is fermented without the addition of any sugars, so in my own opinion it is the most like wine in taste and buzz.   I have tried sour apple starbuzz while drinking it with my friends and also double apple.  It's amazing.
Another good combination of tobacco while drinking beer in my opinion is lemon.  Especially when drinking some Harpoon UFO. (I haven't tried lime flavor while drinking corona but i image that would be good too.)
