Picked Up Life Insurance But...

Recommended Posts

i went ahead and purchased a life insurance policy and was asked if i smoked cigarettes (which i don't) so i said no.

They then took a saliva test to prove iam aids free and cigarette free.

do you think hookah will bring the test back positive? I usualy only smoke washed tobacco.

yes they are looking for nicotine in your saliva. If you smoke hookah you absorb nicotine, washed or not. The traces get lower the longer its been since you smoke so it wont always come up positive. It depends on when the last time you smoked before they took the saliva test.

Yeah, definitely keep us posted on the results. I looked into getting life insurance a while back and was told that their tests were so accurate that they could detect nicotine in the boday up to a year after you last smoked. I'm pretty sure the guy was full of crap, but I realized those insurance companies are pretty serious when it comes to making smokers pay. When I told the guy I smoked hookah my quote went from $28/mo to $125/mo for a term/life package. Unbelievable.

This topic comes up from time to time on the forums and newsgroups for regular pipes and cigars. It turns out that there are insurance companies that don't discriminate or discriminate very much against pipe and cigar smokers. Here's an article from Cigar Afficionado that may be helpful.

TADA I'm a life insurance agent lol.

One of the hats I'm currently wearing and I've worn in the past is that of a life insurance agent. In fact I got my first policy the summer I started smoking hookah (should have popped up in the test) I went through: saliva, blood, urine, you name it and it never came up. Now given it could have been b/c I hadn't been smoking in a while but I doubt it.

Most insurance companies regard 13 cigars a year as "occasional" which means the nicotine levels in your blood stream are low enough not to flip their triggers. Hookah works about the same so you shouldn't need to worry.

DUDE that's ridiculous especially for a term. What company was it with, I can probably tell you who to look at for a better deal.

I'll be sure to pause my smoking when looking for a policy....

To be honest what you should do is start looking, and then if you really feel the need to stop a then maybe a few weeks to a month.

Remember a few things:

- some companies only require physical exams above a certain amount or above a certain age (for instance one I know of only requires it over $250,000 or 49 years old)

- some require it regardless of the amount or age (I know of one 0-70 you have to get a physical)

- And like the OP said some only need a cotton swab or something to determine nicotine levels which can happen at anything above $50,000.

so it all depends on what you're looking for and where you're looking for it as far as what steps you'll need to take.

I remember when I was 16. Since my mom work for the hospital, she gets good benefits including life insurance for your family. A life insurance Agent came over and got saliva cotton swab from the whole family including my 12 year old brother -_-.... They don't discriminate age hahaha. My dad was applying for the $500,000 insurance policy but was denied cause he smoke cigs and they only gave him a $100,000 Insurance policy.

Definitely curious about your test result, Click. Wouldn't surprise me a bit to find you were considered a non-smoker according to their test. Hookah may not be terribly healthy, but I find it hard to believe it's anywhere near as dangerous as ciggs and somehow I don't think it hangs in your system as long either. Back when my hubby dipped regularly the smell of him was just awful, that stuff came out of his pores all the time. He STUNK. Now he smokes ciggs, the reek is entirely different but he always has that faint smell of ciggs on him whether he's had a cigg or not that day. Hookah smoke just seems to have a much different effect on the body.

When I started a life insurance plan with Statefarm 2 years ago, they asked if I smoked tobacco. I told them no and I didn't get any surprise phone calls or letters in the mail. I was hookah-ing every other day at the time. A saliva test was done. No blood or urine. I went in for a drug screening on behalf of U.S Homeland Security just last week. I told the examiner I smoke water pipe tobacco only and she ended up checking "No" in the box. Maybe they should consider rephrasing the question.

If hookah gets really popular, they'll have to I think.
