Nour Brass Vs. Km

Recommended Posts

my opinion: KM's arent all they're cracked up to be. you said you already have a km trimetal right? a km is a km. unless you're really head over heels for one design, i say go for the nour.

yea i hear ya man. i am just concerned with smoke volume, and the size of the hose port on the nour. i was looking to see if anything had experience with both, and could give a bit of a comparison for me.

i have 4 kms and have had 1 nour and 1 alnawras. i've basically completely stopped using my kms. i'm getting sick of an unresponsive draw from the kms. the syrians (i have 1 leb pipe and another on the way) have a slightly more restricted draw but really put out the same amount of smoke - imo. i know that eric (owner of tangiers) is a fan of syrians because of their build quality. personally, i'm more a fan of the syrian aesthetic, as well.

everyone should have at least 1 km, imo. you've already got that covered, i say go for the syrian.

pick whichever you think looks best or if you prefer a tighter(syrian) or looser(KM) draw....
Pretty much the main and only real difference between the two when it comes down to it. In terms of smoking.

I prefer the tighter draw on the Syrians. Its not as wide open as a KM, but far from being restrictive at all. Plus, I think that most of the nicer Syrians are beautiful. The overall design of most KMs seems to be similar and boring lately.

I'm curious, since you say you've stopped smoking your KMs, why do you say everyone should have at least 1?

because if you don't have at least one, you will be flamed incessantly on this, or any other forum. plus, just because they don't match my tastes currently, doesn't mean i don't think they're good pipes. i've just been all over the wadih al safi, ara' and fares karem recently to smoke egyptian anything. i'm beginning to see the influence my friends and family are having on me as of late. speak leb - smoke leb.

i've just been in leb mode recently. and not hyper-euro beiruti leb mode. like jabal leb mode. it's dangerous.

and i have armenian and greek friends, so ottomans are a touchy subject. but i'm realizing that ottoman related stuff is pretty popular in the leb/amongst lebs. maybe that's because turks and lebs suffer from the same, "no, no, we're european, seriously." syndrome. whatever, i subscribe to some of that, no matter how stupid of it sounds sometimes.

I have a KM OG Trimetal and if I ever picked up another hookah, it'd probably be a Nour or Al Nawras. Nicer to have a little variety, don't you think?
my point, EXACTLY. and yeah, there's like 4 essential types of kms.
there's the standard km type, and every variation of that. eg amer, exotica
then there's the ice bucket, which is just an amer or some variation of that with an ice bucket thrown on top.
then there's the 'insert' type. which is an amer/standard km with a plastic or wood piece jammed in the middle somewhere. eg. pear, abanos, americana
then there's solid. which is just cast stuff, eg. kamanja. shamadan/kefae/precision

the trimetals also fit into this category
new standard trimetals fit into the standard/amer type
masha'al fits into the ice bucket type
heart of the lion, OG trimetal, and pharonie are insert type - even though they're metal
there aren't any trimetal cast ones that i know of. maybe the kamanja counts because the tubes are copper?

that's just my observation. they're great pipes, don't get me wrong, and there are some pretty sexy ones (halzone) but at this point it's getting kinda stale. i'm somewhat aesthetically bored with kms now. maybe i've just done so much browsing that i've seen everything.

The thing with Syrians (Nour/Nawras) is they're the "new shiny object" right now. Not really any good ones have been around for a while. Now a new (old) stock of them has been discovered. Get one while you can, because soon all you'll be able to look at again are the KMs.

Jabal mode huh - gonna bust out the shirwal and grow a moustache? Or maybe join a militia! Inno at least Istanbul is IN Europe I gotta say I've been in whatever-I-can-get Leb mode....

I mean I'm Iraqi with connections to Lebanon going back decades, Ottoman heritage unites us, and I'm starting to think those were the best days for Iraq in the last few hundred years - Iraq has been HEAVILY influenced by Iran and more recently Turkey, both in terms of culture and language--consider this, we're the only non-Levantine Arabs who call it nargile, vs shisha from Kuwait and Saudi on down.

I would think if the Syrians get popular enough, there's no reason for them to disappear - I mean when I started smoking and lurking on HF back in 05 (I can't believe it took over 3 years to join!), KMs were nonexistent in the west - all we had were generic Egyptians, Mya, and Mya-esque knockoffs.

It's not like they're gonna stop being made in Syria - it's a question of, will someone in America or Europe import them in big quantities? As the reputation goes up and they start to be seen in the same light as KM or Mya, that may become a reality

I agree to an extent. They seem to be really popular with the kids who just started smoking in the last year or two.

The new Nours really aren't bad. Aside from the smaller hole port being a pain in the ass sometimes, I still like it more than any of the KMs I own. The Nawras John has are MUCH nicer though. I believe Eric said they were '05 pipes or something, meaning they fall into that "new" old stock category.
