TheyCallMeDave
So after the third time I resent the letter to Ms. Newton, I finally recieved a reply: David, Thank you for your response to my post about hookah. Seeing as you already stated that you know that hookah is bad for you, I’m a little confused as to why you continued on with your email. Also, this being the 21[sup]st[/sup] century, you can find any source of information to back up anything you wish to believe. If I wanted to say that I believed that unicorns were real, I guarantee you that I would be able to find internet sources that would back up this belief. However, the point in my message was to inform others about the misconceptions about hookah. My source was the Mayo Clinic in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They are a large clinic that not only treats patients but works closely with the University of Minnesota on research. So I feel that the information I provided had some credibility to it, whereas the source you gave me was in a language that I did not speak or understand and was a small website. It doesn’t take much to create a website. On that website you have full reign to write whatever you please. As consumers of this information, it is our responsibility to filter through bad websites and find the real, pertinent information. Again, the point of my posting was to educate others. That has been the point in all of my Monday Messages. Most of my messages have been about Meatless Monday which is a campaign aimed to help people reduce their intake of saturated fats. When I sent that message out, it was right after Tobacco Awareness Week, which is concentrated on educating people on the effects mostly of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. So, I decided to add hookah to that since it is becoming more and more prevalent. I hope this gives you whatever info you were looking for. Thank you for your inquiry. Vanessa Newton Graduate Assistant, HEAT Rowlett 110 I/O Club Secretary vanessa_newton@eku.edu vanessa-newton@live.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Seeing as my most creditable source was from the Multan Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy, Paris XI University and MINAR scientific studies I don't see how my main sources are any less reputable than hers. I suppose she was just picking out my weakest links, which is to be expected. Overall, I suppose I could've just dropped the whole debate, and left it at me not sending an email. But, it is what it is.
TheyCallMeDave
My Response: Ms. Newton, I appreciate the response. Of course I understand that not all of the websites and organizations I listed below were of full credibility. However, seeing as my most creditable source was from the Multan Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy, Paris XI University and MINAR scientific studies I don't see how my main sources are any less reputable than others used to speak out against hookah. I feel compelled to state that I'm not saying hookah increases my chance of immortality, but simply that to compare to cigarettes is taking an arguement to an extreme I feel isn't just. Again, the point of my email is to reveal the misconceptions, of the misconceptions. However I obviously see that we have our polar opposites in this situation, and just appreciate an initial response. Please continue in your endevours for student health. Best Wishes, David FrankHookah Culture Enthusiasts on Campus President ------------------------------------------------------------------------ And that's the ball game folks, not about to have this turn into a email war. We both have valid points, and certainly aren't changing our minds. I just wanted to give her a piece of mine

Hookah_510
from the tone of her 2nd email, it sounds like she doesn't know much and is only sending her message on behalf of her job or duty. you sent her 3 emails. ignoring the first 2 tells me she doesn't truly care and/or is stuck face. her argument has no relevance to your initial email. Venger
Typical tactic to a weak argument. people in political debates do it all the time. They can not attack the argument so they attack the source. For example Gop "you got that info from cnn" dem "you got that info from fox". This is exactly was she did. Your point was clear and she could do no more than say mayo clinic trumps foreign site. My question to her would be who paid for the study and why. If big tobacco had paid for this you can bet your sweet ass the results would have been different. Ray

ih303
Well Dave, you have my respect. Your responses were intelligent and well-written - truly a credit to the hookah community. I too am sick and tired of all the misinformation that surrounds this culture. The good news is that we're not alone. I've got a new hero. His name is Kamal Chaouachi and this guy's a powerhouse. Check him out here and here. I only have one request - send that second link to ol' Ms. Figgy Newton followed by a single word... BOOYA!!

BOOYA!!
Well again, as Ms. newton and I are no longer conversing, I'm afraid I can't. However, I think she would all appreciate a well written letter containing those facts from any of you who wish to explain in more detail the faults of "WHO"'s studies, how if The Mayo Clinic of Minnesota was true in their studies they probably would have made press, and show her to TRUE science behind hookah (Thanks to ih303). Although I can't directly give out information to Vanessa Newton, I will say that if I had a name like Vanessa, I probably would have 2 emails like these: vanessa_newton1@eku.edu vanessa-newton@live.com

I could never have the space on this announcement to bust all the silly myths surrounding hookah, so please read the information listed at the end of this page, and send me an email if you have further questions!!! Myth: Hookah puts out as much tar as cigarettes do. BUSTED!: To produce tar, tobacco must be BURNT at temperatures of 800 degrees or more. Hookah tobacco is BAKED at 300-350 producing little to no tar, while cigarettes produce tar at 850-950 or more! Arcane
spell check before you submit that....unless it's too late. i know it may seem trivial to some people, but when trying to present an intellectual argument, the last thing someone wants to see are spelling errors. when looking for hires, i've skipped over resumes once i noticed a spelling error. if they can't be bothered with a simple spell check or worse, don't know the proper spelling of a word, it just looks bad....
