A little off-topic conversation in another thread got me wondering: how many people on this forum like to do the classic method of putting coals right on top of the tobacco and smoking? Also, share your bowl packing techniques, favorite coals and tobacco, best bowls, etc if you're interested.

Havana Pipe Flavor is a fave of mine to do this way. Nak Rose, Jasmine, and DA are also really good.

So by some weird miracle, a friend of mine came over with his tobacco stash, which just so happened to have some Nakhla Zaghloul.

We just gave your set-up a go, and it was AWESOME. Nakhla Zaghloul / Al-Waha Pear, in a wide Syrian bowl, and three CCNs. Flavor and buzz were reeaally intense! Had to take a breather partway through the session, but I have to say your suggestions were great! Thanks a bunch.

This a a big No-No with 100% normal shisha ie: Tangiers, Romman, AF, etc... correct?

From what I know you can do it with anything, but it's best done with dry, unwashed tobacco.
So I take it Nakhla requires more heat than most other types if you can just place the coal right on top of the shisha? I mostly smoke Nak, but I'm still looking for the best way to heat manage it.
Secretz, you're the man.

Never tried it. Might with a pumpkin and a cheap hose so i could toss it if it went bad.

This is a good plan even if it goes well. If you're smoking Zag with no foil, it's good to dedicate a whole pipe to it, and no sense devoting your best for it.

Yes, you can smoke any Nakhla without foil, and it is tasty. Most still prefer it the normal way, though!

Its radically different to smoking with foil. And I commend anyone that can keep zalg or kahn el khalili with open coal in their lungs for more than a few seconds

Do you still move the coal around for heat management or do you just leave it in one place? Obviously if it gets harsh I'd move it, I'm just curious.

I leave them through most of the session.

1 - Pack the bowl a little extra high with tobacco
2 - Light your coals as hot as they'll get
3 - Put them right on the tobacco, and put the windscreen over the bowl
4 - Wait a few minutes for everything to heat up (about five minutes is what I do)
5 - Enjoy

It's rough. I've done this at home like....3 or 4 times (once or twice with Zaghloul, 2 or 3 times with Salloum), and twice in Lebanon with 'Ajami. Of all of them, Salloum is the best. Zaghloul has very little taste other than burning, Salloum has some sweetness and background depth. 'Ajami just tastes like a a bad cigar with zero pull. Forget anything more than the tiniest puff of smoke.
