JDHarding
Yeah I'm sure this topic has been done to death. However, I'm not sure this particular method of packing Tang in a phunnel has been covered. I watched John's vid of Eric packing Tang into a phunnel, and he's just scooping the stuff in there with a fork, and it dawned on me. Pack this stuff in layers. The first layer should be packed up to half-way below the middle hole of the phunnel, and it should be packed down HARD. This is the flavor right here. The syrupy, gooey, thick, tasty reservoir of your phunnel. Pack it hard with a fork. The second layer should be packed up, lightly, to the top of the middle hole, but not over. Foil it, punch whatever hole design you like, and smoke it up. Make sure the tobacco doesn't touch the foil unless you're using some low heat coals. High heat coals will burn that first layer under the foil, then your whole bowl will taste burnt. Why pack the bottom layer hard? It's a focus of flavor. When you smoke the top layer, the juices will drip down into the bottom layer. Since the bottom layer is packed hard, the juices will stay there on the top of that layer, and trickle through to the bottom more slowly, thus the flavor will become more focused. I've tried this a couple times so far and it's brilliant. The flavor is much stronger. I use two of John's natural CH coals on a medium phunnel with a windcover helping. I put the cover on till harsh, take it off, smoke till weak, cover back on, rinse and repeat. The flavor is awesome. But you guys can use whatever coal method you prefer. Just try this method at least once with your phunnels. You might be surprised.
IainUM
this is an interesting tactic i use an oyster fork (ordered it with my first order of tang and an hj mini) and basically followed the video of eric packing it. eric says in the video, and it also says it on the bag, that the tobacco should be packed to the same consistency that it had while in the bag you got it in. i've just followed those ideas and have smoked some bowls of tangiers with good results that way. still fine-tuning the stuff, of course, but it is going good so far
Barnaby
This reminds me of a packing vid from WAAY back, where someone did it in layers as well. packed the bottom real hard, and then alight on the top, very much like what you've said here. I've never tried it myself. Will have to give it a whirl after I acclimate my stash again..

I guess either way will work, but I've found packing the whole bowl tightly causes the top to burn.
jorlyfish
I'm going to try this out. The tops of my bowls always get fully cooked, while the bottom stays pretty much looking like it did when I packed the bowl. Maybe this will help. Amn_sinclair
I can really say that I'm usually pretty inconsistent about the way i pack my Tangiers bowls, either way i end up with at least the bottom part being packed fairly tight then the top either tight or loose and i've never really had any problems at all unless im using a new brand of coals then i just have to figure out how many I need to be using. JDHarding
I tried tightly packing the whole bowl today, and it was okay, but the top got burned again. Even with little heat it still burned. I still think the method I mentioned works better. That first layer needs to be penetratable by the heat, so lightly pack it. ezxen
I generally pack my tangires loose when compared to a tight pack every one else dose . I pack it fluffy then push it down but no so much that the tobacco is mushing together. ive bin smoking the same bowl for 3 days now two AF QL for about an hour . JDHarding
Looks like Nakhla also works using this method. Just packed a bowl of Mizo Strawberry Kiwi and wow it's strong flavored. Nice and sweet.

jorlyfish
Tried this last night, and guess it was touching the foil, because it tasted and smoked pretty terribly - harsh, burnt-tasting, etc.
rhineholt
Im no master with tangiers, but whenever i dont have the tobacco all up in the foils grill, it doesnt smoke well for me. MAYBE ITS JUST ME.

I start mine fluffy and just push it down so that the tobacco is just barley below the rim . jorlyfish
Nope, I get it to smoke great using my usual method. I tried JD's method to see if I could save some shisha by not packing the whole thing tight, but no such luck.

jorlyfish
Yep, packing it fairly tight in the whole phunnel.... not shoving as much as humanly possible in there, but it's all pretty tight. Works for me.
ihcake
I'm not too bad at packing a phunnel with Noir. Keep in mind, where I live most Noir flavors don't work, only the kashmir ones do, but since I work at a lounge I usually pack the bottom half of the bowl fairly tight, then go back over it with another layer of tobacco to where it's above the rim of the bowl. Then I put one foil on it and compress it so it lays flat. THEN i put a SECOND piece of foil on. I find this usually helps with the burn at first since it seems to be the syrup burning initally. For my hole pattern, I do the whole top of the bowl starting from the outside using a corn cob holder thingy working my way towards the center of the bowl. hopefully this works for someone and ya'll don't think i'm crazy or something. ukhookah
I foung lucid too juicy, and if I packed it eric style, my bowl became a mess as the juices would over flow and trickle down. What I did instead was to soak up the juice with a kitchen roll, in other words, make the shisha drier. Then packed it eric style. Results were way better for me. But in the end, I realise tangiers aint for me.
