Bealestblue
Ok, just to start things off, I have anxiety (it's a bish lol) So last night a friend took me to a hookah bar, I really enjoyed myself (we were there 5 hours). Im not really a frequent smoker so as a rookie, smoking 5 hours and not knowing the proper way of doing things I developed a huge headache and the worst case of rapid heartbeat I've ever experienced. Then upon coming home, I read about all of these dangers of Hookah's and all that and now I fear all of these Cancer scenarios after only 1 session (be it, it was 5 hours) and that I've messed myself up for life lol. Im pretty sure the irrational thoughts are just a part of the anxiety but can someone give me any info on the dangers of this. I woke up feeling sluggish and weird as hell lol. joytron
If you are truly concerned I would go see a doctor. What you are asking for is medical advice which no one is qualified to give you but your personal physician.
alexander
The increased heartbeat was from the nicotine (a stimulant), the headache was most likely caused by dehydration/slight carbon monoxide ingestion. Since you are new to smoking hookah, a 5 hour session is going to give you a pretty big dose of nicotine, but you'll be fine. Just remember that the "smoke" you're inhaling is only water vapor. As opposed to combusting the tobacco, as in cigarettes, you're simply vaporizing the glycerin that the tobacco is soaked in, that's why at the end of the session, the dehydrated tobacco remains in a bowl. If the tobacco were combusting, there would only be ash left (like when you smoke a cigarette). Without combustion of the tobacco, there is no tar, which is the main source of lung problems in cigarette smokers (including cancer). All of us here on the forum will agree that no kind of smoking is necessarily "good" or even "not bad" for your health, but compared to smoking cigarettes or cigars, hookah poses a very small health risk. (but really, if you want a more educated opinion, go talk to a doctor or physician. i'm just a kid studying philosophy)
kmccoy90
Definitely go to your physician. Anxiety and panic disorders are very real, and things like caffeine and nicotine can physiologically exacerbate those problems. It's very to easy to feel your pulse and blood pressure increase after smoking too much and talk yourself into a bad state of mind. Your physician will be able to diagnose your situation and prescribe whatever is necessary to help you out. As far as the smoking goes, you'll be alright, I promise. I think you're taking in more than just water vapor. Also, there is some tar produced from it, just a hell of a lot less than cigs, Being new to hookah and smoking for 5 hours sounds like a bad idea. Also, if you read the reports about it a one hour session being something like 200-1000 cigs, that is just wrong.

Smoking hookah to me is probably the safest way to absorb nicotine as you're not burning the tobacco or having it sit in your gum.
kmccoy90
Also remember that there are people who smoke cigarettes or cigars, or chew tobacco for DECADES and never develop any health problems whatsoever. Hell, Winston Churchill was a super heavy cigar smoker and lived to his 90s, and George Burns was rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth and lived to be 100. Basically, don't stress about the 5 hours you spent smoking hookah.

I can relate with anxiety and such. if you still feel crummy talk to a doctor. but i think it's just not being used to large amnts of nicotine. Dimeouflage
The only time I can remember ever getting a headache is from a session of Romman fruit punch. Not sure, could have just been coincidence. Im fine now though........Right?..........GRAMMA IS THAT YOU???????
blagage
I have been smoking hookah for years and i still get that feeling on occasion (mainly the first time when i tried tangiers). It is the nicotine making your heart rush and your head hurt. There have been times that i have just had to go to bed so i don't pass out. Keep it to a minimum when you smoke. There is no way you smoked one bowl for 5 hours so stick to 1 bowl. There is nothing to worry about, but if it is persistent even 24 hours after the smoke definitely get it checked out. keep smoking though as recreation of course. It should lessen. smoke safe my friend
Epoch
Five hour smoke is way too much for a newbie. First time I smoked hookah, I puffed really fast for ages, and I got sick as fuck.
