Grommet Stuck, Ashtray Will Not Come Out - Help!

Recommended Posts

So i was able to get the bowl out with ease, however, I believe the grommet has rusted into the hookah and I cannot remove the ashtray. I tried boiling it in a pot - perhaps that was enough. Any words of advice?

Cut the grommet?

Next time try using wet paper towel http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/40144-wet-paper-towel-grommet-wins-another-point-in-my-book/

If its not metal then a flat tip screwdriver from the bottom of the grommet and be careful not to deform the grommet.

or get some needle nose pliers and grab the grommet from the top and try to screw it off while pulling.

Boiling it? I don't know if you know this, but rubber gets soft when its hot, it might also turn into a liquid when it gets too hot. So if you're trying to take rubber off of something; causing it to adhere and become more form fitting by making it soft, is not the way to do it. I'd get some tweezers or needle nose pliers and pull it off. Or if its that stuck, just cut it off and buy a new one at a local shop for 50 cents.

I did what you said and tried using a wet paper towel, but now my wet paper towel is stuck. I tried getting the wet paper towel off with a wet paper towel but didn't have much luck.

I've got an idea though. I think tonight I'm going to try a wet paper towel. You think that will work?

Sorry for the additional post, but I got to thinking about something. In the OP he said he couldn't get the ashtray off because of this "grommet" situation. That seems highly suspect AS does the idea of a metal grommet. I wonder if he's got a Mya (or other modern pipe) and is actually referring to the "head unit" that screws onto the top of the shank and sometimes holds the tray in place. I think there's something we're missing here.

I had kind of wondered that myself. I have a hookah with the top part that the grommet goes on screws in and sometimes it gets stuck.

wow. this blew my mind....if he did have a rubber grommet, maybe it was too small for the shank, and got stuck, sometime my grommets get stuck....guess we'll never know
