Hose We Knows

Recommended Posts

Heya gang. Pardone moi if this has been answered somewhere else on the forum that I have been unable to find, but I must ask:

Does anyone know where to buy convoluted hose (in bulk) on the internet?

Just a bit of info... Underneath the rubbery fabric and thread wrapping on a premium washable hose (i.e. Razan, Nammor, etc.), there's a rubber hose. From what I can tell, the style of hose used in these cases is referred to as "convoluted" hose based on it's spiral-like framework. So far, the closest thing I have found to what I'm looking for can be found here. I'm still not sure, though.

If anyone has any idea who manufacturers/distributes the brightly colored, opaque tubing used in washable hoses, please point me in the right direction. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Making your own hoses?
Yes, but they're for lounge use only for the time being. I have a really difficult time getting things from prototype to production.

i like where this is going..some of those tubes on Travis link look like the right stuff....they dont carry that kind of stuff at a home depot?
Well, the good lord has not seen it fit in his grande design to bless his people in Rapid City with a sacred Home Depot yet, but we do have a lowes. It's kind of like HD's retarded cousin. Oh, and they don't have what I'm looking for.

the problem with convoluted hosing is that its generally spliced for cords.
YES! Fortunately the tubing I'm looking for is made from a very different material than most wire loom.

Not aimed at you, Joy, but to any of you who don't understand the difference between "convoluted" and "corrugated" tubing, check it:

cool, Hey also check out flexiline anti-microbial food and bevarage tubing

Can you send me a link to what you're talking about?

Looks like someone has something up their sleeve. ;)
In deed... but I'm not sure the best way to go about it.

Problem: All washable hoses on the market today are poorly designed, poorly outfitted, and poorly manufactured.
Solution: Design a washable hose from the ground up with a focus on smokability, durability, modularity, customability, and functionality.

I have accomplished this and more on a budget of ~ $13 with materials purchased locally, at retail price. But here's my problem. I can't bring something to the market that I've put together from readily accessible bits and pieces (even though that's what gives my hose a huge advantage over the competition). So could I sell it as a kit? Maybe not sell it at all but just put it out there as "open source". IDK... I'm not all about the money but it'd be nice to eventually have an idea pay off. (BTW, I'd like to post pics but I'm hesitant until I figure out how I want to take this thing forward)

Still, all the hoses I've made so far I've made using the tubing from broken-down Razans, Nammors, and Grands. If I can find that exact tubing in bulk, I'll be golden.

What do you guys think?

I think I figured it out. I'm going to make it open-source.

Hopefully this week I'm going to add a page to my lounge's website including a parts list and assembly instructions for my hose. I'll try to remember to take some pictures tonight to give you guys an idea of what I'm talking about. But here's a couple of selling points.

I built this hose because I'm tired of throwing my money away on washable hoses that have a total lounge-lifespan of maybe two months. I'm tired of repairing hoses that look like they were put together by someone's fourth-grade class (packing tape and hot glue do not work well with something labeled "WASHABLE"). I'm tired of tossing out an entire hose because one thing comes apart on it that would require more work to fix than the hose is worth (i.e. the wrap string getting burned through). Because of these things and more, I decided to take a new approach and make my own hose.

The hose is simple and durable - There are only a handful of parts matched to fit perfectly together. No glue, no tape, no string - nothing that could break or come undone.

The hose is modular and customizable - If something needs to be replaced on my hose, it's possible to replace ONLY that part. In addition, there are many options readily available for customization including color, material, dimensions, etc.

The hose is ridiculously functional and smokable - You'll understand when I post some pics.

People, I really don't want to come off egotistical about this, but I am very proud of it. Beta testing at the lounge has yielded extremely positive results with the exception of a few people who don't really care for the hose's looks. But to each their own. Keep in mind I'm no engineer. I'm just a guy who sees problems and tries to discover the solution in the simplest way possible.

We'll see what you guys think of it when I post pics. Go easy on me, mkay? :)

so when u say open source does that mean u are selling the hose put together or in a kit where the consumer puts it together
I'm thinking of having three options: 1) Complete hose customized to taste, 2) Kit with all the parts and instructions for assembly, and 3) Parts list for folks to buy themselves and instructions for assembly.

I'm limited to option three only until I can find a good source for tubing. But this is still cool since it can be obtained from an existing washable hose. That way everyone with a broken or bunk washable can salvage it and turn it into a new, better hose. Call it hose recycling. :)

Keep in mind that, like the hookah I built, I designed this hose to be used in a lounge where gear is used much harder than at home. For example, we've lost quite a few hoses to coals falling off hookahs and burning through the hose. Don't ask me how this happens because I don't know. All I know is it's the quickest way to send a hose to the graveyard. I had to figure out a simple, inexpensive way to prevent this from happening. So...

One of the options of my design is a washable hose cover that's made from cotton and does not melt like that rubbery, synthetic stuff they use to wrap the hoses or the velvet covers you can buy online. The ones I ended up making are black with a gray pattern held in place by a small zip-tie run through a buttonhole sewed in the hem. The cover protects the hose as well as hides any repairs made to the hose, while the dark pattern and bunching caused by the length of the cover hides dirt/ash (unlike the colored fabric of nammors and the white stripe on some pom-poms).

Why zip-ties you ask? Because 1) Their cheap and easy to replace, 2) They give the cover a nice, crisp edge at the end while staying hidden themselves, and 3) They can be put on tight enough to keep the cover from sliding either on its own or from someone messing with it - something elastic cannot tdo. When the cover needs to be washed, the ties are simply snipped and the cover removed. (Of course the cover is optional and can be personalized with any color/pattern fabric.)

Every element of the design of this hose is based on either solving a problem or improving a feature found in typical washable hoses. Like I mentioned, I love the things. When I smoke at the lounge, I won't use anything else.

Still confused on the convoluted/corrugated, hard to tell in the picture, but is the only difference the slanted coils?
The slant you see on the convoluted pic is actually a structural coil. Corrugations, on the other hand, are a series of parallel channels in the hose that are not connected.

By the way... I apologize for not getting pics up last night. We got real busy at the lounge and I didn't get a chance. I did bring a hose home, though, so I can take pics and put them up during my lunch.
