Lakemonster
When I first came here, there was a bit of a rivalry that developed out of a creation of HF.net. It would seem that .NET was born of resentment and shrouded in "shadiness"..... so a bit of argument ensued. So... I figured it would be only right to share with you why Catalyst and I have opened a new forum dedicated to Hookah enthusiasts. The both of us decided that a forum with different features and attitude would fill a void space in the interworldnetthingy. Each of us had specifics that we wanted to focus on. I wanted a forum where the membership was all 18+ years of age.. with a forum dedicated to vendors news and announcements so that the General area did not get overly used for promotion.... as well as a hookah "modding" forum. CP wanted to include dedicated forums for Hookah and Tobacco reviews as well as a "trade" section for tobacco and gear. I personally have no intention on running some sort of rivalry or competition with HF.com.... in reality, I have no intentions at all of halting my posting, reading and enjoying this site in the least. This is not a "trade-off" for me..... simply an addition. My goals are to expand hookah "enthusiasm" by way of the internet. So..... everyone please enjoy Hookahforum.com.... and if you like...... then come over and enjoy http://hookahnation.net/hnforum/ as well. dikydave
refer to any of my other 100 posts about why (anybody) you shouldnt be on here advertising for another forum. no matter what your intentions, it is wrong. having other websites or posts that contribute to the community is fine, but diluting and dividing the population only hurts the community. thepyrofish
In the end it's up to the admin/mods if this post is OK. That said I don't think this will hurt the community at all. On the cigar boards I participate in, there are many members who are members at multiple boards and we all know eachother and get along great. Don't think of it as a dilution of the community dude, it's an expansion of it. I doubt very much (he said as much himself) that he wants to compete with this forum. It should be like an unofficial partnership. If people find his forum they could very well end up being valued members here as well. Unless people of your opinion burn that bridge before you have a chance to check out what's across it. If you don't like it feel free to not participate, but isn't spreading the knowledge of hookah and our love of it what this place is about? crepenchicha
No wonder he didn't like the idea of giving credit where its due for reviews that were originally posted on THIS forum... hmmph.
mushrat
To be honest, We've had other forums start up, be advertised here, and gone on to..well...hmmm.. There's nothing wrong with other forums as long as they aren't out to deliberately harm this one. Its a free net and a free forum and as far as I can see..Lake and CP are still contributing to THIS forum as well as the other one, and to be honest, if they can actually enforce their age limit...more power to them. I doubt anyoen is going to STOP posting here because of yet another forum starting up, and who knows, it may eventually steer people HERE. So i'd say for everyone to chill...isn't the first time..won't be the last... As for me, i've always stayed right here...through quirks, tweeks, and resets. HookahDuck
I say more power to them.. though this isnt the first time it has happened, and it certainly wont be the last; I have never seen one turn out to be much.Pyro, what cigar forums do you use? dikydave
it's just pointless is all, there's posts made elsewhere that would only benefit more people if they were just made here.
nuschultz
Diky, thats like saying that we should only have one manufacturer of hookahs, and everyone should work for them, because it dilutes the community to have more than one supplier.
dikydave
no, you dont manufacture information, you contribute and distribute. whatever, let it die, and it will die.
Buford
I don't see it as a bad thing, really. It's like forking a free software project, in that a fork is made to better serve specific needs. Oftentimes the fork maintainer contributes back to the main branch and vice versa, and eventually some become their own entity that cater to different crowds. Look at Linux distributions as an example. Ubuntu is based on Debian (and somewhat Knoppix, also a derivative of Debian), but they cater to a different audience. Ubuntu is better for desktop workstations considering the usability enhancements and good PC hardware recognition, so I use it at home, but Debian is more geared to the server realm with less emphasis on desktop usability (and I use it at work in that capacity).I used to be an active cel collector, and there were several forums devoted to the hobby. Some forums focused on specific series, some were more of general info, and others were more of a "for sale" board. If there is interest, it will survive. There is nothing to stop people from frequenting more than one location that have different foci.
dikydave
i would agree with you completely if i saw any real difference between this forum and whatever they are trying to make. if it focused on just one aspect, like if it was a trading forum or something, then that would be beyond awesome, but it isnt, it is just another forum not unlike this one at all, and what most angers me is that they come here to tell people about it. Using nuschultz example above, what if I came into your place of business and told your employees "hey, come work for me", which whether stated that way or not, is fully implied. something like this thread could go on forever. thepyrofish
@Hookahduck: My main board is cigarsmokers.com, and I'm also on cigarpass.com and cigarsnobs.com. I have accounts at some of the others, but only so I can read when I'm linked.

Sonthert
I used to work for a guy who dealt mostly in scrap gold and other precious metals. People are often surprised how little the actual base value of jewelry actually is, or rather how much of a markup there is. A woman came in with a ring and wanted to know how much it was worth. My boss, the owner, offered her, like $50 for it, a very fair price, based on the day's gold spot, the contents of the gemstones and the like. She said: "Oh, thats not very much..." and she trailed off in though when another guy who was browsing said "I'll give you $65 for it." My boss explained very carefully to the guy:I pay the rent here so that people come here for me to make money. Just because you're standing here or even a customer here doesn't give you special rights to interfere with me making money on property I rented. As I like to put it; I wouldn't walk into your house when you were having a party and invite everyone at the party to come over to my house for a party going on at the same time. There is a serious difference between LakeMonster and CB starting their own website and the swirling "F you" attitude that surrounded the HF.net controversy. I am sure nobody would begrudge their announcement, but at the sme time propriety dictates minimizing this sort of thing. I think it would be a good idea for people to NOT promote websites in their signatures and the like. How are you going to stop minors from getting on the site? What if we, the moderators, talked Adrock into adding a vendors section and perhaps a used/trade area? Would that persuade you to stay?
Sonthert
Not that LM or CPB have websites in their signatures. Just something other people have complained about.
Lakemonster
Stay? Not leaving....... not asking anyone to leave. I can see what you mean about coming in and promoting... I simply have a different perspective. My friends and I play poker... we play at each others houses. When one of us has a free weekend they can host.... that person usually brings it up at the fellow buddies house... basically inviting everyone over for the future. Theres no resentment in that... no one gets slighted. People have come in and "plugged" their simular forums at one I own.... It never bothered me because I figured it furthered awareness. I'm not going to do this "competition mindset" or some sort of resentment thing... What for? Anyway. I dont intend to mention it any further. I'm dissapointed that some of you feel the way you do.... or are under the impression you have. Tangiers.... local markup is around 12 to 14 times the cost. I set for a hobby. One day I'll splurge and get myself a faceter....
