Hookah History

Recommended Posts

Hookah originated in India using a coconut shell base and a tube with a head. As it traveled west to Persia, it was used to smoke wet tobacco leaves with a coal on top, which gave it a stronger flavor. It evolved during the period of the Persian Empire into a hand-carved wooden base and pipe. Hookah, called Narghile in Turkey, found its niche in Turkish culture approximately 500 years ago, where it changed in design and size. Brass and glass were added to the design and less wood was used, as well as decorating it with mosaics. Hookah bars were opened around 200-300 years ago and the hookah waiter was equivalent to a chef, a master of packing and preparing the hookah. Hookah then migrated to the Arab world from Turkey and has been identified by various names such as Argilah and Hubbly-Bubbly. Since the 1960's, hookah has slowly gained popularity in the Western world, continuously evolving in shape and design in order to meet the demands of our modern society.

"Cigarettes are for nervous people, competitive people, people on the run. When you smoke a narghile, you have time to think. It teaches you patience and tolerance, and gives you an appreciation of good company. Narghile smokers have a much more balanced approach to life than cigarette smokers." ~Ismet Ertep
