  1. 1. What kind of coals do you use with tangiers?

Recommended Posts

I've been noticing that a lot of people use different types of coals for Tangiers to get the best experience. I want to know which types of coals do you use and for your preferred bowl. Please fill out the poll, and then list the bowl , and the number of coals you use for your tang and coal combination and why.

Golden Canaries.
Mainly because of the low heat output they have. In my experience Tangiers has a lower heat threshold than most other shisha brands. I find it best to apply low heat, widely spread over the bowl.
I use about 4 on my large each round, and throw 4 more directly on top of the dying ones about 30 min each rotation.

Small bits of CCNs. I usually use halves - three on a bowl, and then a fourth when those start to die out.
Last night I used little coal scraps though... Chunks that had come off of unsuccessfully-cut CCN cubes (which I find harder to cut than flats), and a few coals that I had put out with water (when they were about 1/4 their original size) when I wanted to end a session a little earlier than I had planned.

It depends on which bowl I'm using. For a medium Egyptian I use two large pieces (2/3's of a finger) of Shishaco finger coals. I love those coals. For my cheap large Chinese funnel I use two very long chunks of Shishaco fingers (just over 3/4's of a finger). With my Alien, two to three medium chunks (about half a finger).

Generally I start out with all the coals I've heated for the session, let the bowl warm up, then remove a coal and see how it goes. Depending on the smoke I'm getting, I may put the wind cover on, if that's not enough heat I put the coal I removed back on.

But everything changed night before last because I used the reverse phunnel foil method on my large Chinese funnel. This means you gotta use more heat. I wanted to go to bed and smoke and didn't want to have to get up to heat more coals so I lit three chunks of Exotica nats. I took one coal off for a little while, used the wind cover for a bit, then had to put one of the Exoticas back on. It was great. Last night I used two chunks of the Exoticas on my Alien with the reverse phunnel foil method, and that was perfect.

My preferred bowl? With Tang? Probably my medium sized Egyptians. I just get great Tangiers sessions with them. I don't think I'd ever use Exoticas on this bowl for Tangiers, the Shishaco fingers are a much better size for it. When I use the reverse phunnel foil method on my Egyptian (probably tonight), I'm guessing I'll need to use the same amount of coals as I normally would (two large chunks of Shishaco finger coals--equaling about 2/3's of a Shishaco finger) as well as the wind cover (as needed). Bowl size will prevent me from applying more coals than I'd normally use with it anyway.

The longer I smoke the easier it gets to figure out what the bowl needs based on the smoke I'm getting. The smoke talks. I listen. I obey.

i use coconaras as thats all i have in stock. i start with 3 standing on the high end side in a triangular pattern. after 15-20 minutes i flip them and put them with the big side down. after 45 minutes or so, when the coals are small, i put on 3 new and rotate to the fresh parts of the bowls. i'm pretty new at tangiers and had problems at the beginning to get the heat right, but with this management i got it perfect. Had my best session yesterday with some orange soda. even though i was pretty drunk the taste was awesome, even my friends that don't smoke hookah regulary found the taste great aswell.

This is with a small phunnel btw.

Mind if I edit your poll adding more choices? I'm seeing a lot missing...

Thanks for doing that! I made the poll when I was up late at night. It looks more professional now.

I use CCn Flats on Tang with a small or large egyptian. I also use those with a small phunnel. Here's how I roll:

Alien: 2 halves
Small Tang phunnel: 4 halves
Small egyptian: 2 whole coals, suicide style
Large egyptian: 3 whole coals, suicide style

Okay, you gotta educate a girl here. What's suicide style? Two in the stomach, one in the head=triangle? I don't know, I'm scraping the barrel here.

Is it just me, or did Tangiers used to be VERY heat tolerant? I haven't smoked it in a while but I remember when I did, around 2007, it would take whatever heat I had....

Update! I just got back from my local smoke shop and purchased a couple of fingers of Exoticas. I broke 2 pieces off, heated them up and proceeded to load a large egyptian of Tang Noir vanilla and Lucid Mint mix.

All I can say is wow! I think Exoticas are my new coals designated for Tangiers. It's the best tang smoke I've ever had. It does the job way better than CCN flats.

I think it really depends on the flavor.

and the packing technique...

True, forgot about that...

Kinda defeats the purpose of the poll to "prefer" every coal chris.
[/quote]

Too funny. I like so many different coals too though, although I don't seem to like anything anybody else likes.

I didn't prefer every coal, did I? The ones I chose are the ones I like using for Tangiers. I added the option to allow to choose multiple ones because I felt it was unfair to only be able to choose just one. I'm sure others will agree with me on this.

And Genie, I gotta admit I only added Shishaco because I saw you mention it. :)
