Looking For Advice

Recommended Posts

(English is not my first language so if there are any errors sry :P)
Hey!, im new to this site. i joined because i been smoking in bars and hookah lounges for a year now and i want to buy my own and need advice from someone who has a lot of experience with hookahs.

I don't know where to buy or what to buy. There are so many types and all of them seem kind of the same to me. I want to know the difference between a really big hookah and a 12-20 inch one. The ones i smoke in lounges with my friends are very big and heavy. i thought they were better than the small ones but my friend, she has this really small one, 10 maybe 12 inches tall and i felt it a bit better than the big ones. Also what you guys recommend for my first one and where to buy it. i want the best quality bases, hoses, bowls, everything, not something that is going to fall apart in a couple of months. Anything that you can tell me is appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Sorry I don't have more time to get more detailed (about to run in a few minutes to shoot a short film), but two good brands of hookah to look into getting are Mya and Khalil Mamoon, oh and also Temsah. As for some good sites to order from, see if HookahJohn.com or HookahCompany.com ship to your country or not.

Your English is pretty much perfect, no se preocupe y bienvenido al foro.

Regarding size of hookah, it's a matter for personal taste and what you want to do with it. Subjectively, I prefer larger pipes. The bigger vase (bottle) gives more space for smoke to cool and I find that larger pipes give a smoother smoke, all other things being equal. And a bigger bowl of tobacco gives more stuff to heat up and smoke, so more smoke and flavour. Plus larger pipes tend to come with bigger and better accessories; sure, you could replace these on a small pipe, but better to buy one that comes with what you want. The only caution is that the truly huge pipes (over about 36") become more of a pain to clean, but I just bought a 35" pipe and am very happy with it (after fixing some issues, see below).

Regarding quality, I'm not going to recommend a particular brand or retailer; you do generally get what you pay for. You could do worse than to ask your local cafes whether they would be willing to sell you a pipe or bring one in for you - their pipes will be set up pretty well, and if they'll sell you the pipe then they'll be a source for spare parts / components, too. This is an important consideration; even high-quality pipes don't reliably come with the right grommets (sellos de goma) to make them work well. On a high-end pipe I just bought, the vase grommet was too small to seal properly or make the pipe stand up straight in the bottle, it looked like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The bowl grommet was too small to seal the bowl supplied with the pipe, and the mouthpiece needed an extra grommet, not supplied with the pipe, to persuade it to seal into the end of the hose. When I fixed those issues, it's a great pipe. Beware of such things, because you want your hookah working properly before you worry too much about which is the "best" hose or bowl. That may be an argument for buying locally if you possibly can.

So I guess my advice would be to buy the best pipe you can afford, and think about how and where you're going to get spares/consumables, but don't go buying upgrades until you are comfortable with the pipe.
