r1v3th3ad
Well, my buddy fried my hot plate last night when he accidentally broke a jug of lemonade on the countertop while I was lighting coals. I have been hunting around for a new one. I don't like the Walgreens(what this was) ones because they seem to corrode pretty fast and die(if it wasn't for this incident, it would have probably died in another month or two anyways), but am willing to get another if need be. I checked Walgreens website and could not locate them...I do not have a Walgreens near me. Any recommendations for a good hot plate guys? I was hunting around on Amazon since you can get free shipping on some stuff... I'm just looking for something a lil less expensive(Walgreens I paid around $13) and I'm considering one of those two in ones which run around $30. If you guys see any deals that are pretty good, please let me know...I'm hating using the gas stove to light my Cocos

kmccoy90
What brand was it? I got a Durabrand burner from Walmart for Christmas. It was dirt cheap and does the job just fine. Can't speak for how long it'll last, though.
I'm honestly not sure...its the only brand that Walgreens stocks that I know of. I've been through two of them(coil erodes away) and my friends have each went through a few the same way I check Walmart here at IUP and back home in the South Hills of PGH and could only find the hot plates that are that rubber like material. My buddy has one of them and they take a really long time to light coals. I was just hoping that someone had good experiences with a certain model and would chime in, or noticed a bargain on what seems to be a good one(customer feedback on website)...I'm no good at hunting for stuff like this. kmccoy90
Check the Walmart camping section. Mine is just a regular coil burner, with a splash tray underneath and a knob on the front to set temperature. Super simple, inexpensive, gets the job done. r1v3th3ad
O okay, we don't have HEB or ARC in our area that we know of...I also checked a thrift store and Goodwill with no luck. Next trip to Walmart this week(move-in/first week of classes) I'll check the camping section...I didn't think to look there, I was looking in the cooking section where I found the ones that are no bueno
ih303
I've been experimenting with one of these at the lounge lately: My idea is to prolong the life of the burners by putting this rack between the coals and the burner. It will take a while to find out if this really works since I'm not always there to make people use it, but it actually has the added advantage of holding more coals and heating them up faster since the more coals on the burner, the more total heat. In theory this should work, though. And if it does, people could actually light coals on their stoves at home without worrying about ruining the coil. We'll see what happens. Matto
The Walgreens one is made by a company called Sylvaina, I just got one so I could stop ruining my glass top stove, it says it has a 2 year warranty so maybe if it dies within a few months I can sweet talk my way into a new one. ih303
I still can't believe we're still using these stupid coil burners to light our coals. They're so inefficient. I've got some ideas knocking around in my head for a solution, but I'm still stuck until I can figure out some place local that will work with me to help prototype all my crazy ideas. Plus, I've already got my hose and hookah prototyped and figure I should make something happen with them before I move on to something else. Grrr! I hate coil burners though!
