Sugar Gliders

so Pocket Pets came to my mall the other day to sell these newly u.s.domesticated animal known as a sugar glider (or sugar bear)

once bonded with you, they can travel with you for hours on end in you pockets and such and will almost never leave your body (and if they do will come right back)

they're family pets and get along with everyone and anyone and anything in their family (including dogs and cats)

they're part of the marsupial family, not rodents

the people that came to my mall are the most respectable company selling them, so they are quite expensive (i think $540) but they also come with cage and start up food and such.

just curious if any of you have heard of them or know anyone that has one?

Had a friend back in college that had one. went with him everywhere. Stayed in the hood of his hoodie most of the time.

Only reason I never got one is you really need to build them a large encolsure when they are home...never had the space.

they are cute little things but not $540 cute

Well you would be surprised at animal cost. I have always gotten rescue dogs, but my wife more than anything want's a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Great Dogs, but buying one from a breeder, you are looking at a grand, easy. And here in Texas there are a lot of breeders, some states it's even higher...for a DOG!!!!!

I had a friend that had one, and they are cute little guys, but they also make these reaaallly annoying noises called "crabbing" .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zt8uLejOuaQ

And they're nocturnal. Imagine this at night, while you're trying to sleep.
When you first get a baby, you have to keep it with you essentially at all times to make it bond with you, and whoever else you want it to bond with (your girlfriend, mom, brother, etc.... or whoever else you don't want it to get pissed at) - this is what makes it glide back to you when you give it to someone else.

Those are waaaay cute! But I work at night, so it probably would get neglected. It would drive me nuts over the weekend while I'm sleeping at night.

gliders are incredible pets. i had several(hence my name hah) they are very different from the typical small pet. they need a large living area, plenty of fresh food and water, lots of attention(lots only need with one. if you have two or more they will entertain each other pretty much.) and a lot of patience. my gliders ate a blend of melons, apples and carrots every night(for the most part... i always mixed it up) with a little bit of dry cat food or mealworms for protein. they are like little kids. always getting into trouble, always needing new toys to entertain themselves and also have a neat unique personality. they arent for everyone though... not everywhere in the world has an exotic pet veterinarian. look to see if ytou have one. they are illegal in many states as well. overall. besides dogs, best pets i have ever owned :)

just realized i cant edit a post... sorry for the double.

crabbing is a defense mechanism. they only do it when startled or feel threatened. barking is another vocalization that is used to pinpoint the locations of other gliders.

That's not that bad, Don't they have Cicadas down in Houston? Nothing like a nice quiet summer night when the Cicadas roll into town. Take that crabbing over that any day.

Agreed. The sound of cicadas is almost soothing sometime though.
