I dunno. Maybe I'm just too unbiased. Any TV I watch is DVR'ed or downloaded, so no commercials. No commercials means no overplaying of my favorite song. Life is much better when you shun the corporate brainwashing...I mean advertising machine.
am i the only one in the world who thinks led zepplin totally sucks?
I don't think they SUCK. I just wouldn't listen to them voluntarily. It's just not that interesting to me. So I guess I effectively agree?
i really havent listened to much music of that sort so dont know how to classify it, but i'll look into your suggestions, thanks.
There's some amazing music out there that's is incredibly complex and subtle if you're open to it. Most people listen to a really tiny spectrum of guitar driven music - nothing too wrong with that, I like alot of it myself. But there's alot of different stuff out there. I download random stuff all the time just to see if I might find something new that I might enjoy. Give some of the links I posted a listen. Again Boards of Canada has an outright amazing body of work. I personally really dig Casino Versus Japan more, but they have a similar vibe. Aphex Twin is great as well - probably one of the most well known IDM artists - alot of people are familiar with him. He's a genious, and his work runs the gamut from experimental to pop. Something for everyone. If you're really into rock and don't care for 'techno' (which is a dead genre of electronic music from the 90's by the way - generally when you say techno you mean House or Trance, and that's only a fraction of what would fall under electronic music - hell alot of rock now is half electronic anyways, the last few Radiohead albums stradle the line very finely between Glitch/IDM and Popular Rock - in other words, don't throw all your shisha out with the bowl water), I high recommend checking out some Post-Rock. There is some outright brilliant work - some of which you may have heard and not even known it.Music is one of my passions. I love to point people to good stuff.

I'll definetely check out some of those bands, Clay...I'm kinda the yin to your yang, I love hearing new stuff. Last couple of days I've been listening to this band called Mindless Self Indulgence...man, does that music go good with a game of Dead Rising.

Mindless Self Indulgence IS really good. Pretty crazy, but they're a great little band. If you like Thom's solo CD - it's pretty glitchy - there's alot of IDM you might enjoy.

IDM is a generic name for alot of similar music. It stands for 'intelligent dance music' but many use it to encompase more than REAL IDM. I covers really fast acid breaks to really mellow ambient and downtempo. There is some cohesion because there are alot of artists that make both. The label Warp Records (Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Autechre) has alot of these arists and Rephlex has a lot of true IDM. Though I perfer the hybrid artists. I personally group IDM and Glitch in my organization as they tend to work pretty well together.

Hehehe... unfortunately no. It's actually taken me a long time to come up with my own nomenclature that I use. There really aren't formal definitions. Alot of music - especially electronic is really hard to categorize because it may seem like multiple things and really be doing it's own. It's the kinda thing you learn as you listen to the differences. If you find a really good site it may be more specific on certain artists and you start to hear similarities and see how the lump together. Honestly it's easist to move from artist to artist to explore - usually you can find someone similar to someone else - sort of migrating in different directions depending on what you like - that or you take a shot in the dark, which is alot harder if you don't have some idea.1) Dance 2)Techno 3)Trance would be 1) a non-existant genre that people use to refer to House/Trance - really just means something you can dance to 2) most club music from the 90's can usually be refered to as techno, has a very specific sound usually involving certain popular electronic instruments/sounds/arangement from the time 3) Trance is a fairly broad..........................actually.... I don't know if I can find the link... there was this horribly laid out... but interesting site I found once that had alot of electronic genre's mapped out... that would probably be really helpful... it has alot of weird specific things too...FOUND IT. W00t. So scratch what I said before... this will sorta give you some ideas - you'll immediately understand why electronic music/techno/trance/house do cover alot of music but don't really work as terms to cover giant areas. This a great site (again terrible interface even though they updated it). The site is ugly as sin but really informative for most popular genre's of electronic music - don't trust it's categorization univerasally though (also the majors on the left aren't so much 'root' categories for all the stuff in them... they're more 'pages'). It'll be overwhelming because it's got alot of weird niche's in it. But I guess that's good. They're also not 'weighted' so while some genre's are huge others have only an artist or a label - so again. Grains of salt. Also he's REALLY opinionated. I'm not saying that he's not right on certain things - but he's very clear in what he likes and dislikes. I also disagree with a lot of his arrangement and it's not up to date - but it's pretty good up to the year 2000+ area... If it's not worth anything else - it will show you some loose connections in evolution and provide a lot of samples and throws some terms around. It's definitely worth a look. It's not perfect, but it's the only thing like it I've ever seen online.http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.htmlBTW, it also covers Hip-Hop because it's really a genre of electronic music and developed along side the rest of it - if you listen around you'll understand that. Also read the tutorial thingy with a rough history of electronic music if you're curious.EDIT: The more I go through this again - the more connections are glaringly missing - but again it's not perfect. And again - don't try to categorize this stuff this specifically - you're head will explode. It's better to just understand the stuff in general terms - because it's all pretty fluid which the site is trying to illustrate, questionably successfully. Again - this is in no way all encompassing - there are ommissions and weighting errors. Still - I think it's valuably despite it's weaknesses - I only point them out provide better information.

They aren't your BEST bet, but they are quite good. They're more DJ's that play mixes - so they're good for that. You might try Mr. Scruff which is pretty fuckin' great. 'Get A Move On' is his most well known song. But the whole 'Keep It Unreal' album is quality.http://www.last.fm/music/Mr.+ScruffYou might also like The Wiseguys, DJ Food, DJ Shadow, or Bonobo. Also, Amon Tobin is great but can get alot darker - he moves you a bit closer to IDM like Squarepusher and Aphex Twin on the more uptempo stuff. His song 'Four Ton Mantis' is pretty dope and the Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory soundtrack he produced is brilliant. http://www.last.fm/music/The+Wiseguys://http://www.last.fm/music/Mr.+Scruff...he+Wiseguys://http://www.last.fm/music/Mr.+Scruff...he+Wiseguys://http://www.last.fm/music/Mr.+Scruff...he+Wiseguys://http://www.last.fm/music/Mr.+Scruff...he+Wiseguyshttp://www.last.fm/music/DJ+Food < Bad sampleshttp://www.last.fm/music/DJ+Shadowhttp://www.last.fm/music/Bonobohttp://www.last.fm/music/Amon+TobinYour really looking for downtempo breaks, sometimes called lounge or chillout or whatever other goofy names people like to call it.

kindof a random mix, O.A.R., Dropkick Murphys; Indie stuff like The Killers, Interpol, The Bravery, and Modest Mouse. Metallica, System of a Down, Avenged Sevenfold, and Rammstein for pregame warmup music. A little bit of rap and some patriotic country. So I'm kinda all over the place.
