glider
since i was a freshman in high school ive had another hobby to pass the time. Carnivorous plants. most of you all probably know about the Venus Fly Trap.... but how about these? these are pics of my plants by the way. Nepenthes 'Peter D'Amato'-no longer my plant. boo. sold it for 200 bucks though. Nepenthes trap insects by drinking the nectar along the rim. the nectar intoxicates the insects and they fall in and get dissolved by the acids that lie in the bottom of the trap. the larger species catch small invertebrates as well such as lizards and the occasional rat. Nepenthes come from Indonesia and Malaysia. Nepenthes alata Pinguicula 'Titan'- these plants have leaves like fly paper. bugs are caught and they trigger the release of digestive enzymes that are reabsorbed by the plant. Pinguicula come from many places. This one is a hybrid of Mexican types. others come from SE united states like florida and others live in Asia. Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle'- like Nepenthes. they have nectar along the rim and the bugs fall in. these plants strictly reside in Alabama, Florida and Georgia. one species lives all the way up in Canada. Sarracenia leucophylla Utricularia subulata. Utricularia have underground traps. they look like tiny bladders(common name for the plants are bladderworts) and when something activates the trap via trigger hairs it is sucked into the trap faster than a blink of an eye. the suction is often so violent it that it kills the organism. the traps are basically tiny stomachs and the bug or whatever is dissolved and absorbed. they are mainly grown for their orchid-like flowers. these are the most abundant genus growing in every continent except Antarctica. lastly. Drosera capensis. Sundews come in many leaf shapes and the leaves are covered in hundred of tiny "hairs" that are tipped with a dot of a sticky resin. when food is captured, the hairs react and move to pin down the bug. some are so reactive that the entire leaf wraps around the meal... as seen below. Sundews also reside in every continent except Antarctica. meal time > enjoy. if you have any questions. ask away. im pretty keen on these plants Alex
Arcane
any way i can get some in hawaii? that's pretty nifty.
glider
actually. one of the biggest suppliers of the Nepenthes lives in Hawaii. Hilo i believe. but you are one lucky SOB. you could grow about 80% of all carnivorous plants outdoors year round without trouble. but you can also order anything from the mainland. google carnivorous plants and you should find a bunch of info on vendors, care and carnivorous plant forums as well, all of which im a member of. Arcane
well, we're not allowed to bring fruit or regular plants into the islands...i dunno how a carnivorous one would fly. but, i'll give it a shot...
agunn1231
i used to have a grip of carnivorous plants. when i was a lot younger. sadly, too young to really understand proper care, and they didnt survive the colorado winters, but i bought new ones the next year. i should give it a shot again. I have had an interest in carnivorous plants since i was in 2nd grade.
ah. most vendors will supply a phytosanitary certificate. if they dont supply them they dont cost much. like 10-15 bucks.
you should! there is so much new information out there and plenty of resources for you to succeed. start off with some simple plants and get yourself a few strong CFL bulbs. youll be set for indoor growing. most dont even need a terrarium contrary to belief. ntur
i had a venus flytrap when i was about 10, and then it died on me. i think i left it out in the cold for too long, they are really cool plants.
kcK
I've always had an interest in them, but I can't say I've pursued it. Not that I'm lazy, I've managed to grow plants in the past that turned out spectacular. Maybe it's just the notion that I'll always dream of being eaten alive by one if I grew it.
Nepenthes are passive eaters. whatever falls in, falls in. Venus Fly Traps, Utricularia(bladderworts) and Drosera(sundews) are the only genus that have any kind of trapping movement. if you all are interested, here in the summer i will have hunderds of the Drosera capensis. they self pollinate and spread hundreds of seed that will literally go everywhere and will grow anywhere. it is known as THE most hardy carnivorous plant. i can only kill it one way by completely drying it out. freezing does nothing. a light dose of herbicide does nothing. pouring gasoline over it and lighting it on fire does nothing to it. the plants have really dense and thick roots. when the main plant dies, the roots spawn several baby plants that take its place. anyway. i will have tons of seed grown plants and ill send them out to people for shipping. ill provide potting mix and simple care instructions as well if anyone would be interested. noodle
Very fascinating. I was reading an article a couple weeks ago about a recent discovery that a certain species of pitcher plant has evolved to harbor roosting bats. Instead of digesting animals that fall in, it digests bat guano.
