Hassouni
http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-447-hookah-heater.html Discontinued. I saw one for sale in Lebanon, where they use natural coals almost exclusively. Thinking about tracking one down somewhere, as lighting coals indoors is not my favorie.... Aquarius
hehe, the hookahmag(a german hookah magazin) tested exactly that thing. but the test is from 2006. they say its heats the coals very fast, but you have to be very careful with this thing. it seems to get damaged very easy. i think this is kind a advancement: http://www.super-shisha.de/SuperShisha-p387h15s19-Elektrischer-Kohlean.html?refid=Froogle many german smokers got this thing, and are very happy with it... greets
joytron
I had high hopes for this product, but although a good idea, it doesn't work out. I thought electrically heated coils would be the perfect alternative to charcoal. I was wrong. This thing produced harsh air when used instead of coal. It wasn't even thick harsh smoke. There was barely any smoke and the air coming off of the hookah was very harsh. My hypothesis for the harsh air is that microscopic metal particles came off of the heated coil. These particles become airborne and enter the hookah to be eventually inhaled by the smoker. This causes a harsh sensation and is likely very unhealthy. If there were a product that was similar to this one, but that worked, I'd be the first to buy it. Maybe if something like this were made but with a glass shield between the metal coil and the bowl, or with a strong magnet employed this problem would be solved. Only time will tell.
Just what in the hell was this person thinking?
IainUM
i love the negative reviews about people trying to use this instead of coals as opposed to using this to start coals. edit: also, i dont see the point of using this when a hotplate is cheaper and does the same job. Hassouni
I think this you can stack the coals kind of like a chimney starter
dizzbizz
This was actually sold as a coal replacement at first. But obviously it doesn't work so they sell it as a Nat coal lighter now. If you close enough on the pic you'll notice it says "Tobacco heater".

Stuie
It was originally designed as a charcoal replacement. H-S rebranded it as a Coal lighter. Look at the box it says "TOBACCO HEATER"
Hassouni
Huh. Interesting. I think an electric charcoal chimney would be a great idea though....
mushrat
The other guys beat me to it. Yes it was originally designed as a charcoal replacement. When it started getting panned in reviews they flipped the picture over and changed what it was for. I recall laughing our asses over it back then. mushrat
ah yes... http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/3149-electric-tobacco-heater/page__p__34288__hl__electric__fromsearch__1#entry34288 http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/4075-putting-the-electric-theory-to-rest/page__p__44502__hl__electric__fromsearch__1#entry44502 2006
mushrat
And then there was this from 2007. I think there was an earlier one but i dont feel like finding it. http://www.hookahforum.com/topic/8060-electric-hookah/page__p__100267__hl__electric__fromsearch__1#entry100267 Funny if you put "electric" in the advanced search we've been talking about electric hookahs since 2005 or so. Now we have ones that are getting closer to actually working it seems.
Sychosis Dragon
I use a Black & Decker buffet range (coil burner) and never had a problem. It lights Coco Nara's in about 6-7 minutes.
Hassouni
I'm thinking more for bulk coals where I may want to light a lot at once
Sychosis Dragon
I know Coco Nara supposedly has some kind of a can thing that you put on the stove and it lights all the coals inside very fast...
mushrat
hell, just go to a thrift store or junk shop and by an old aluminium pot. drill some holes in the bottom and put it on your gas stove.
noodle
Another solution can be to get some wire gauze from a hardware store. Stores easier after you're done with it.
