I Don't Understand Nakhla Da

Recommended Posts

Well call me surprised. I've been smoking Nakhla DA for a long time now, at home from the boxes and jars, and in the Middle East with whatever they use (kilo cans I'd guess). I've always liked it, but it's been very variable.

For a while people said the jars were the way to go, but the times I got the jars they were dry and had no taste. Picked up a jar on a whim the other day, it too looked dry, and I was sad. Smoked it tonight...and MY GOD, for the first time ever, I tasted apple! Honest to God apple! I really only tasted it after about 20 mins of smoking, when some of the heat had died down, but it was smooth and delicious! Looks like I got the winning jar!

This ever happen to anybody else?

I think the trick is use less heat than you would otherwise for Nakhla. I've got it right now with 2 CCNs split in half, and it's subtle but awesome.

I think you might be right on the idea of less heat. It seems the hotter the tobacco gets, the heaver the anise flavor it for me.

I use the same amount of heat as I would with any other Nakhla flavor, and I always taste the apple flavor. But it's a subtle apple flavor, not at all dominant (although it can clearly be separated from the anise), so one shouldn't expect the apple in Nakhla DA to taste "clean" apple. That's been my experience at least. And I've noticed the apple flavor better in jars than regular boxes (as well as the molasses being more moist). My favorite flavor (well, it's a tie with K-Peach) for sure.

From personal experience, whenever I let a bowl acclimate for a while and then started smoking it, it tastes just like apple sans the anise flavor. Either I keep getting good packages or that's how you need to prep it for the apple goodness. 2xApple FTW!

I enjoy nakhla dapple. Very sweet. I have had varied batches where some taste better than others. I'd love to see a mizo dapple. Only thing I hate bout nakhla is the stale after smell the day later. It really reaks the place up

I have noticed that as well. Da is my default tobacco and i like how it changes up. macho sent me some Da that was just crazy anise like. the last batch i bought was more applely. i like how it changes it up. it helps me not gert sick of the flavor. and when i open a new pack of the stuff its kinda of a surprise will i get more apple with undertones of anise or will i get anise will apple undertones.

I've had a few really great tasting batches that were nice and complex and others that were flat. it has been my experience that from the jar the DA is a bit more red and juicy whereas the boxed were more brown and oily. I haven't bought DA in a box in quite a while however, not since they started using the foil bag. Funny thing is, I can't remember how my Nak came before the bag. I think it was just in celophane but that doesn't sound right... man, I dont know.
