Lakemonster
I just got my QT in this afternoon... and Im smoking my first bowl. This thing is great except for one thing. I cant seem to get a thourough purge of the vase... I responded thread about a purge problem with a MYA earlier.. and Im not sure in the problem stems from the same thing or not. With most traditional hookahs.... the direction of airflow is vented downward into the vase when you blow back through the hose. The MYA QT does not do this. It does blow at a slight angle.. but not enough to disturb and move the smoke up from the waterline and out of the purge valve... When I do go to purge it, it simply blows off the smoke that is built up inside the hollow where the hose connector and purge valve screw in. The permanent fix? Probably not as easy as would be prefered. The hose connection would have to drilled and tapped for at a steeper angle, which is a bastard to do if you are not drilling into metal squarely.... which leads me to belive they arent manfactured that way to begin with. As for a home cooked solution. I am a bit stumped... theres not much room to work with between the where the hose connection and the downstem is on the inside there.... thinkin cap time. lilotaku
Lakemonster,I'm in the same boat you are in. Although i don't have a Mya QT, I do have a mya with the same type of stem base design. The only thing i can think of for a homebrew fix is taking a bendy straw and connecting the "head" of the bendy straw to the inside of the stem where the purge valve is and then letting the rest of the straw sit inside the base cavity and just leave it a good bit above the water line. When you go to purge it, all the stale smoke will be forced out the bottom of the straw and up through the head of the straw to the purge valve.Regadless of the purge issue, my mya is still prolly my most favorite hookah to smoke of all the ones i have. Loumeer
Yeah same problem with my QT.....it's not that big of a deal though.--Amichai Israeli
thepyrofish
I find that when I purge, if I don't hit the hose afterwards the bearing will stay up off the valve a little. I just barely breathe into the hose, as lightly as possible for a minute or two and it clears out pretty nicely. I don't really purge unless I burn it, so it's not a big deal for me. I'm unusually patient when I have my hookah going :S
Alqoshnia
I dont mine not being able to release all the smoke from the base, but does anyone else notice that the ash tray doesnt sit on top of the stem correctly? Everytime I take off the coal and try to hit all the ash off the whole tray gets lopsided and I get worried of the bowl popping off and breaking
Lakemonster
Yes..... I have that problem too. I have a feeling that I will be breaking out the needle files to fix that. I assume they intended for the bowl grommet to hold it down. but..... no. The bendy strw might work.. but the distance between the stem and the connection holes inside are prolly only a 1/4 apart.. and it has to make a hell of a bend right there. so Im afraid the straw is just gonna crimp.. havent tried it yet tho. I am working on a permanent device that cleans well and is easy to re- install. So far it involves an inner-tube and a razor blade.... .......and a beer. lilotaku
well, i wouldn't worry about the straw crimping on the bend. You can just cut the head piece to size so it doesn't crimp. I was gonna experiment with this as well, but i gotta find some bendy straws first . Hopefully your inner-tube/razor blade combo works. Please post up if you get it to work. thepyrofish
My bowl grommet holds the ashtray down just fine...maybe it has something to do with the grommets that don't work quite right?
ghostofdavid
So should I regret the fact that I just ordered a Mya QT this morning?
inimicus
No, the QT is a champ.Just depends on how picky you are.
cymptom
Yeah, I made a post a little while back about the check valve not clearing most of the vase. My solution is to blow into the hose a bit, then take a small puff, blow into the hose a little again, and repeat. The idea is to circulate the smoke and bring whatever you were trying to clear closer to the check valve port. It works fine... you just can't clear the vase of smoke completely unless you take the bowl off.
Grant
Now you all know what I am talking about with my MYA Crimson. Hope we can all find a fix. HOWEVER, BY NO MEANS SHOULD THIS DETER YOU FROM THE QT OR ANY MYA. They are all excellent hookahs, and I think everyone should own a QT.

But it would still be nice if it cleared it in the normal fashion. Regardless it smokes like a champ though.
nuschultz
Maybe Mya Saray will chime in with a bit of a solution. Generally they are a great company. If need be, give them a jingle. As I don't have a Mya, that is the only advice that I can offer.
Sonthert
I received a Versace hookah as a gift from an ex-girlfriend some years ago which was one of the first hookahs with the same design of common chamber design. Not only do the common chamber models have difficulty blowing out the jar, when smoking, when you first start drawing each time, through the hose, the ball bearing "jerks" and creates an irregular airflow. Sometimes the ball bearing or the valve seat will accumulate a little crud and the ball bearing won't seat properly, making a leak. Thats why I'm a died-in-the-wall standard Nour smoker. gunsboy
A friend of mine just got his MYA. He had some problems with airflow. He found out that the part where you connect the hose to the stem there is a little blockage inside. He used a drill to make the opening a little bigger, and now his MYA smokes great. *TRUE STORY*
Lakemonster
Well. I have partially solved the ashplate problem by using one of those really thick Chinese grommets ( the really opaque white ones) that the hookah shop had... I may yet break out the needle files tho, Id like to see that made a bit more fast than just being held on by the grommet. I still have yet to go and get myself a bike inner tube and make my "angel" to direct the airflow downward upon purging the base.

rishi
Which class/classes of QT does this problem affect? Does it affect all, or are there some stem designs in the QT range which are unaffected?
unleashtheclown
mine does that too, but its not that big of a deal
Lukasa
The MYA Qt is perfect for me, then. I hardly ever use my purge, except when I get bored and like blowing smoke at my feet.

It's really not that big of a deal though -- the solution I mentioned earlier in the thread is not really a hassle and works just fine. A greater design flaw for the S-Class stem in my opinion is the extreme width and rough inner texture of the stem which makes it difficult to clean well.
