bigasif
Hey guys, So I mentioned in another thread that my last Tang bowl didn't go too well, but there was a problem with the bowl before that one too. Note, I never had this problem when smoking Lucid Orange Soda, but it happened when smoking Lucid Sour Grape. So basically, my setup involved a MYA Bambino, HJ Alien Phunnel, Tangiers Lucid Sour Grape, and a Narbish hose. Used 2 CH QL's on the bowl, with varied heat management through the session. By abouut 1 hour in, I felt the taste get a bit stronger but didn't think anything of it, till I tasted something bitter in my mouth. It happened again and I looked at the hose and I saw some juice at the mouth piece. I took the hose out, and blew through it, and a bunch of blackish juice came out, and at this point, anytime I took a pull, I got the same thing, so I couldn't continue. When I was cleaning the hookah, I noticed a lot of the juice had come down to the stem, and all throughout the hookah. So the question - how does this happen with a phunnel? I haven't had this problem before with my tang small phunnel or my HJ Alien, until this session with the sour grape. Does it have to do with overpacking? Underpacking? Too tight/loose? Basically, I'm hesitating setting up another bowl because I don't want to waste this stuff with another session like that before I figure out where I went wrong. Thanks guys, any help is appreciated as usual.
claytronmeans
I would imagine that that would come from over packing. Too much shisha made made the shisha expand and allowed juice to drip out of the bowl and down the stem. That would be my guess.
king_lunchb0x
I would imagine that that would come from over packing. Too much shisha made made the shisha expand and allowed juice to drip out of the bowl and down the stem. That would be my guess.
sounds right..since there is to much shisha and so close to the center hole the juice is heating and become more runny (elastic?) and since the sisha goes above the center the juice will just run down into the base. Now question is how much liquid is inside the hose? The smoke is water vapor thus passing through the hose fills the hose and some water drops will stick to inside your hose. The bigger the clouds the more water is probable lining the hose. Maybe your water level is a bit to high. If i don't wash my hose every few days (i smoke everyday sometimes twice) i can see little blackish drops on the mouth piece and hose port from smoking tangiers Edited March 11, 2011 by king_lunchb0x
antouwan
overpacking, as said above. but that wouldn't explain anything getting in your mouth. there is simply no way for any solid particles to go down the stem, bubble and float through the water, fly through the air and then into the hose. i've noticed with my nuhose that there does appear to be some residue inside the hose, but that's irrelevant of tangiers (i only use the hose i'm talking about at a lounge that only uses nakhla and AF) i suspect it to be tar, but really, i have no clue what it is. just keep the hoses clean and let them dry out and you shouldn't have anymore problems with this
cotsi95
As others have stated you overpacked the bowl and your water level was too high.
bigasif
Thanks for the quick replies guys. Well, I don't know about the water level, because I always keep it at the same level (easy to tell with the bambino since it has markings on the vase, and you can fill the same amount every time) but I guess it's possible that I didn't check it properly. As for the bowl, overpacking I guess makes the most sense. But then I'm wondering how much I should really be putting in the alien phunnel. I basically use an oyster fork, grab some and blob it in, and then pat it down with the fork so that all the shisha is at the level of the outer rim (higher than the inner rim of course) but isn't that always going to be the case with packing tangiers? If it needs to be up to the rim, or sometimes even higher from what I've seen, wouldn't it always be at a level higher than the inner rim? Or should I just pack it the same-ish, but just move the shisha away from the center a bit? Thanks again
redjako
overpacking, as said above. but that wouldn't explain anything getting in your mouth. there is simply no way for any solid particles to go down the stem, bubble and float through the water, fly through the air and then into the hose. i've noticed with my nuhose that there does appear to be some residue inside the hose, but that's irrelevant of tangiers (i only use the hose i'm talking about at a lounge that only uses nakhla and AF) i suspect it to be tar, but really, i have no clue what it is. just keep the hoses clean and let them dry out and you shouldn't have anymore problems with this
If he's on a Mya, sometimes chunks come out via the corrossion of washing non-washable hoses, or, egyptian / syrian hoses tend to have TONS of junk in them (even out of box!) like a Rotator from H-S.com. Overpacking = juices down the pipe. Overpacking = HARD heat management for a good smoke session and flavor. Juices down the pipe (you DO have a hookah with a small amount of length between the water and hose port) = could be sucking up the water into the hose easier (too much water). Edit: I pack phunnels to JUST below the rim. I don't have a Alien (too small for me), but I do have a very small glass phunnel from Santino (brilliant btw, absolutely fantastic for 1-2 rounds. 2.5-3 is rougher) and pack it the same (its like 10 grams..VERY small, so probably comparable to the alien on that level. I like to adjust things ONE at a time, not several things to properly identify the problem. So first, do your packing. Next, heat. Next, water. I like a LOT of water in my hookah's (1-2" submerged, 3" is a bit much), but that only works for larger hookahs which have a LONGER distance from your water level to hose-port.
