OK so it seems like a lot of people have some type of camera setup at home. Feel free to post your rig, share tips, background, ...etc

I took a photography class in high school, then quickly got assigned to shoot for the yearbook. Later that year I got a part time gig with a studio out in town helping out on senior photos and high school dances. Since I have been in the navy, I have had the chance to go to military photography school for a couple weeks. I have one photo that was published and won honorable mention in a photography contest. I am starting to get back into photography as a side business now.

Here is my gear
Nikon N65 (film)
Nikon D300s
Nikon MB-D10 vertical grip
Nikon 28-70mm
Nikon 80-300mm
Nikon 50mm F/1.4 (FAVORITE LENS)
Nikon SB 400 flash
Nikon SB 600 flash

Tips I pass on to anyone wanting to start into photogrpahy
1. Know why you are taking the picture. What caught your eye and made you stop originally
2. Learn to shoot in manual first. You will learn much more about photography when you have to do it yourself. Then move to AF
3. It isn't the gear. Use what you have, until you are 100% positive you have reached its full capability.

It was only a matter of time before this thread was started. Seems everyone on here is rollin knee-deep in sweet cameras and flaunting some sick shooting skills. Where the hell do I start? I know a lot about composition and light and stuff but all I have is a point and shoot digicam that has no manual focus, only manual light and speed settings

How much are you looking to spend? Will you need it to do video or not?

Not sure much i want to spend, and no video is not a necessity. Also possibly thinking of getting one for my dad for his bday, he has a film SLR and I think it's time he went digital.

I have a T1i I was getting ready to put up for sale (upgrading) including the standard kit lens, extra battery and an 8GB card... You even asked about it in my collection thread ;) PM me if you want it!

My T2i cost $769 free shipping, no tax.

Buuut, this is one that does HD video, which makes it more expensive obviously.

I'd say check out the Nikon D3000: http://www.bhphotovi...tal_Camera.html

I owned one before and it was great.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi with a 18-55mm lens, though truthfully I use it now more so to shoot reference material for art assignments and to document completed art pieces than I do what I would consider photography as art with it. I took a few digital photo classes in high school that I enjoyed a lot, which is when I got the camera.
I also shoot some film - I have a Holga, which is a lot of fun.

Here are some the photos I got finished before I left. I typically will shoot portraits, real life situations, and dancing. The black and white was shot with my N65, built in flash, 28-70mm lens and Kodak B&W 400 film. The color ones were shot with my D300s, 50mm f1.4 lens, and sb 400 flash. Hope you enjoy the pictures. Let me know if the link doesn't work.

I agree on the d3000, I learned to use a camera on my brothers that he bought used. You can get one for a lot cheaper than $500 now a days.

Moved on to a d3100 recently because I liked his so much.
