I ordered a discount vortex bowl from hookah-shisha and just notw realized the inner "tube" is open at the top like the phunnel, yet it is suposed to be a vortex. i packed it like a phunnel, except not packed down tight and i didnt cover the side holes... i am also using a new hose and a new adapter with an auto seal... and i am getting VERY little smoke. it sounds like there is a little air being sucked down but i didnt poke holes in the center. before with my little mya bowl and mya hose i got good results, this isnt working well. using 1 of those coconut instant lights. any ideas what im doing wrong?

If your Vortex is broken in the center, tell the folks at H-S and ask about a replacement.

Also, use more heat. 1 coconut coal won't be enough, I use three on a Vortex, usually. Edited by Epoch

well i honestly dont think they would be willing to replace it because it was a discounted product.. but its worth a try.. also a pic would help. What I am picturing in my head is something that is not going to work no matter what you do

well lets see...
the bowl is made of clay...
the whole bowl is hot as hell after every session (without the patch)...
wheres the problem?

arent hookah bowls "fired" so they no longer are effected by major heat?

Your problem is suction....that is since you didn't poke holes over the open top of the vortex your foil is getting sucked down and closing off the top of the bowl. To fix it poke a hole in the center of the hole. Then if you still have a problem work on your heat management, the bowl should be fine.

^ This.
The clay from which the hookah bowls are made of is fired, so in my understanding, it is not advisable to use normal clay that you can just leave out in the sun to dry. Edited by vendetta_revived

ya, tried making bowls out of creek clay...they exploded(moisture trapped within that isn't properly cooked right accelerates and boom)...I'm gonna make another attempt this summer and cook them at low heat...but I doubt its a good clay to use period

I'm pretty sure that you have to use a kiln to heat it to a high enough temperature so make it solid and strong. Y'know... the hotter it is, the harder it gets...

i remember reading in the safety thread of the how to section about how the clay will emit chemicals when heated if the thing hasn't been fired in a furnace. sounds like a bad idea
