Sara T
I have two bowls: a vortex bowl and a Mya bowl that came with my Mya hookah. I usually smoke one session for the life of 2-3 coconut coals (all at once, not one coal, then another coal). When I'm done, the shisha in the bowl has the darkened (char?) layer on top, then normal fresh-looking shisha under that layer - maybe half of the total shisha? So I'm basically wasting half my bowl, right? Can I salvage it? Should I? Should I buy a few more bowls and keep them around to use a couple days later? Does anyone here smoke the bowl all the way? What does a cashed bowl of shisha look like?
IainUM
the deeper bowls always have some not-burnt tobacco at the bottom. i remember reading that just because the tobacco is still wet/not burnt, that doesn't mean that it is still good and fresh. others like to take the bowl and scoop out the burnt stuff and add a layer of fresh stuff. or you can put the fresh stuff back in the tub. i have a phunnel, so a lot of the stuff under the top layer is still juicy, but i just throw it out. i really dont think the amount you save by doing that is worth the trouble. hope this helps! king_lunchb0x
when trying to save the bottom stuff is not always so good. like Ian said just cause its not darkened or crispy doesn't mean it hasn't been used. Especially with bowls like vortex, crown, phunnel styles. instead of the shisha running down the pipe it kind of pools at the bottom. But it is still being heated and used. You can save the bottom but alot of times it just doesn't have the fresh strong flavor.. You can always invest into smaller bowl to really use less shisha and cook majority of what you pack in 1 set of coals. The bowls i can think of are Crown micro classic (or something like that) few ppl around here have them and praise them Hookah John ALien Phunnel (the newer ones are a bit better because their slitghty deeper but still dont use a whole lot) Mini Egyptian clay bowl ( just like that original ones just smaller!!) hope this helps
king_lunchb0x
or u can just smoke an extra round of coals Edited March 28, 2011 by king_lunchb0x
ryno
You always smoke another round of coals, or like others said take off the burnt stuff and add fresh. Alot of times when I'm low on shisha and have this happen, I take the bottom stuff thats still fresh and pack it into a smaller bowl.
r1v3th3ad
try an egyptian bowl, they are smaller and more shallow than the mya bowl...you'll still have some wasted stuff but not nearly as much or second round of coals would be good...you can come back to the same bowl later....maybe take off the foil, flip with shisha biscuit and reapply foil
TheyCallMeDave
Agreed, I think you could get another coal round out of a vortex. Does it taste burnt to you after the first round of coals? Do you feel done? There are a lot of factors behind when a session is truly finished. - If you get trhough one round of coals, feel satisfied and finished smoking, but are upset that there is shisha on the bottom, you might want to consider getting a smaller bowl, like a standard Egyptian. - If the bowl starts to become hard to hit at the end of the first round of coals, maybe three on your vortex is too much, or maybe you have them placed over too much of the bowl. Try a teeny bit less heat, IF this is the case. I suppose what I'm getting at is, why do you always stop aftert eh fiurst round of coals? Too harsh? Don't feel like continuing the sesson? no flavor? No smoke? Whatever your answer is, will help us better define your problem/answer.
I guess there are a few reasons I only do one round (typically). I usually smoke solo, so I'm trying to enjoy this new vice of mine in moderation. I'm also kind of a lightweight at this point, and can get a killer headache if I over do it. And then there's coal conservation, blah blah blah. I just ordered a small tangiers phunnel and some tangiers lucid (horchata and mimon), so we'll see how that goes. Someone mentioned the crown micro - I actually have my eye on one of those! A shallow little phunnel might end up being perfect for me.

Lucy Ford
i almost always use a vortex and just recently started re-poking the holes after the first round. It usually gets more flavor out of that bottom shisha....but usually when i have that juicy stuff at the bottom of a bowl i just toss it

Much longer then any other shisha due to the way you pack it correctly and also the way eric makes it (cooking the leafs before production.) I can get 8+ hours out of my MINI phunnel no problem and its only 1/2-1/3 smoked. So if your really concerned about coal savings tangiers might not be the best for you. That being said it is arguably the best shisha on the market and its all I smoke!
Chreees
To save on Tangiers, when I'm done smoking, I throw the burnt stuff away, but the still unburnt stuff in the bottom I throw it back into the tub. Still smokes fine, doesn't ruin anything. Since I have started doing it, it has made my Tangiers stash last much much longer and I don't have to re-order as often. Now, I only do this when using my Tangiers mini phunnel or small phunnel. If using either of my Crown micro bowls, it isn't enough worth saving.
Awesome. Tip for when you get it: If you're using CCNs, use them on their sides or cut them into halves for easier heat management. Really for any brand of coals, you'll want to use much smaller pieces. I even used four fourths (two CCNs cut into halves, and then the halves cut again) and it worked great. Cp44
I've noticed that if I pack my large bowl nicely and smoke 1 round of coals open the foil. The whole tobacco is burnt (used up) and I do not see any fresh looking ones left.

I'd rather just smoke longer or let it go to waste.
r1v3th3ad
If you are getting a headache, there is a good chance that you are getting CO poisoning(coals not being lit enough is the usual cause)...to prevent, aside from making sure coals are fully lit, make sure you dont have an empty stomach and stay well hydrated...this should help
