E-Cig

So my dad has been smoking cigarettes his entire life since he was about 14. Only period that I know of where he took a break was for about 10 weeks to recover from his injuries when his student wrecked the truck while he was in the sleeper in the back (he's a driver trainer for Swift). He said he had no desire to smoke again, but he picked it back up shortly after he got back out on the road. Every time I see him, I notice his coughing and hacking up shit to be getting worse and worse. I want him to stick around as long as possible, ya know? I know he can do whatever he want, but he's almost 51 and I just want to see if he'll try out an e-cig. So here's what I need to know:

1. Are e-cigs even worth it? Do they actually work?
2. What is the best one to get, and where?

Thanks guys in advance. Hopefully I can get him one and he'll use it so he can stick around longer.

my dad's company works for the company that owns camel....

i think the e-cigs are a good idea. gives the smokers their nicotine dose and, from what i hear, it helps in the psychological area, too. a lot of smokers are used to having the cig in their mouth (hahahahaha, my immature jokes will not be stopped) so that really helps in that area. depending on the cost of those bad boys, it could be at least worth a shot. anything to help.

First, you might want to find out what they enjoy about smoking. Is it the taste? Action? The nicotine? I actually don't think e-cigs are going to help them quit cigarettes. If anything, he'll probably smoke e-cigs and cigarettes.

You should probably re-evaluate this proposal.

I for one think that majority of smokers smoke out of pure habit (incorporated with need) more than pleasure. Almost all of my smoker friends have tried quitting several times so I find it hard to imagine that they get any pleasure out of it?

They hate the idea of nicotine gums btw.

I really really REALLY hate to say this... but I think my sister does it for the "action," or having it there in her mouth (I'm horrible)... She's an attention-whore. She's ALWAYS smoking. It's ridiculous. Most of her paycheck goes to cigs. She started smoking to be cool and rebellious, and she just kept doing behind my parents' backs, even though she got in trouble a million times for it. They finally just gave up. But yeah, I think give her the e-cig and she'll love all the attention she'll get from it, since it's not everyday you see someone smoking one.

My dad, I dunno, he says he's not addicted, but I know he is. Maybe not the nicotine, but the habit of just always doing it. I think he does it mainly because he's always done it, and gets bored while on the truck. He told me that was the reason he started again after his 10-week hiatus- "Well Chris, being here on the truck all the time, it's hard not to smoke." His trainer when he was learning to drive a truck bit his fingernails while driving. Like, down to barely anything. Disgusting. My dad told him that he needed to find a new "thing to do," so one time they were at Church's chicken and he saw him gnawing on his straw. He suggested he do that instead. Ever since, he has. He stopped biting his nails and has been gnawing on a straw for the past almost 12 years. So, I think the same could apply for my dad here. Give him something to replace it with, and it just might work.

I know a lot of people that are trying to quit cigs will keep a toothbrush around and just use that as there oral fixation....

I smoke with an oral fixation...why I have a hookah going most of the day and always smoking cigarettes while walking to and from class and sometimes sneaking out in the middle of........

I bought the e-hookah(no nicotine) and I hardly smoked cigs while the piece of garbage worked(store clerks warned me they break really fast)...but ya, if its the habit addiction and not the nicotine I'd say go for it

I can't speak for the ones that do have nicotine with how they work on cravings...

Chris, just give me your sisters number and I'll talk to her for you, OK? I've tried e gigs a few times to no avail. I used to be a cigarette smoker but have since quit.

Haha... you don't want her number, trust me.

Yeah, more I read up on it, the more I think it'd just be a waste of money. Seems they break pretty easily and are constantly needing replacement parts, which is pretty stupid. The ones who love and rave about them are the people who make it into a hobby and buy several different ones. Everyone else is pretty much like "meh."

Something else that is rather old fashioned, but many have had success quitting the cigs is nasal snuff. The use of snuff is making a comeback in many areas due to smoking bans.

e-cigs work...kinda. I started smoking my e-cig (premium brand 50bucks for battery, 2 carts, and a rechargeable case) I was off regular smokes for almost a year. Then my neighbor moved in and he is a smoker. I would catch a wiff of his smoke in the cool air and sigh. There is nothing like the smell of a freshly lit cigarette. So I bought a pack of smokes about 3 weeks ago.Gawd I missed it. I still use my e-cig most of the day but I smoke a regular one first thing in the morning and about a half hour before bed.
the upside is I can get a pack of cigarettes to last about 10 days.

Personally I just like the feeling of smoking. I like blowing smoke and hanging out outside of a party with all the people that smoke cigarettes. An e-cig would be tight to me, but I'm also not addicted to nicotine.

 • 2 weeks later...
I hate to bump an older thread but I smoked since I was 14 as just something to do and then I got addicted. I recently got an eCig from v2 Ecigs and it works wonders. It's not the regular 3 piece design but a simple 2 piece. It's nice because when your dad is on the road you can buy one that plugs into a 12v and all he has to do is replace the cartridge. He could also ween himself off by decreasing the nicotine levels so that all he would be doing is smoking to smoke and not to fulfill the addiction.

So, I went ahead and bought my drops today. While I was there I picked up a drip tip for convenience and also a "low resistance atomizer. I really like the look and feel of a 510 battery, but they're low voltage so not much vapor. The low resistance atty makes a huge difference and makes my e-cig feel like I'm actually smoking a cig. I'm totally done with those stinky ass camel lights again. I picked up a bottle of vanilla, 1 apple, 1 strawberry and 1 "french pipe" it tastes like a nice dark smoke.

I am quitting smoking myself, had my last one last Friday. My first E-Cig comes in today, and I know for me, and why i smoke (I just like smoking) it should work. But I did a very very large amount of research before deciding what to buy. There are so many variables, even more so then with hookah. There are 4 main methods of using E-Cigs, or vaping as they call it, and each one has its strengths and weaknesses.

Cartridge - these are the 3 piece units like the Blu e-cigs you might of heard of, as well as most of what you will find in stores and smoke shops. While very easy to use, very portable, they lack in flavor, and many a hardcore vaper hate 3 piece units.

Cartomizer - These combine the basic cartridge idea with there own atomizer (the part that makes the vapor). They are still very portable, and easy to use, and give a good amount of flavor, but can be a nightmare to refill on your own, and a little expensive to buy prefilled.

Tankomizer - The new way of vaping, while still a 3 piece approach, it uses a far different method then standard cartridges. With this method you get very good vapor and flavor, and it is very portable and easy to use. Also refilling the cartridges are beyond simple and can save you even more money.

Dripping - The final method, and most hardcore. This method has you dripping a could drops of the e-liquid onto the atomizer, and vaping that. While it does produce the best flavor and smoke out of all the methods, as you can guess it is the hardest to learn and master, and is not portable in the least bit. Usually only the real "pros" or hardcore out there go with this method.

Now i am still new to all of this, and this is just what I think I have learned, I could be off on many things. But for my needs I went with the Tank setup; it gives the best flavor and vapor production, while still being very portable. Now actually picking an e-cig, even having decided the method, is a pain in the butt. There are so many companies out there offering e-cigs, even though most are just the same bits and pieces for a few manufacturers, with there own name slapped on them, but I can tell you some things to avoid.

Blu and all its clones and anything found at 7-11 or most smoke shops, are going to be a large disappointment, and headache. While they do function, if you look at reviews you often have to mod them to get decent use out of them. I doubt your dad or sister wants to do that or deal with that constantly. Now there are some systems like this that are actually decent.

Volcano, a company i for some reason fell in love with, offers a similar style of e-cig (they 510 based systems, and are often the ones that most resemble an analog cigarette) that actually functions well, and while you can use the cartridge method with them, they offer a 510 setup using the Tankomizer system. http://www.volcanoecigs.com/ is there website, check out the Magma for cartridge based e-cigs, and the Magma(T) for tankomizer e-cigs. The nice thing is the Volcano Magma system comes with whats called a PCC, a pocket charging case. It looks like a cigarette box, but is metal, and houses the parts for your e-cig, cartridges, and also charges the battery while its in there.

Now I myself have ordered the Inferno(T) kit: http://www.volcanoecigs.com/inferno-t-kit.html

The Inferno line is based off of a kind of e-cig called an eGo. Joyee makes the eGo e-cigs and they are EXTREMELY popular, so much so many manufacturers copy them. They have much larger batteries then the 510s and can last all day on a single charge, so do not need a PCC. They also don't look like cigarettes, so no one will mistake it for one, so you can smoke it pretty much anywhere. I fell in love with it, from the design, to the kit itself, and mine should be in today.

You really need to sit down with your dad and figure out what would work best for him. There are people far more experienced then me that can help you. But most places you go they are just going to tell you to get a Joyee eGo, and drip. Which is why I did my own research, and came to my own conclusions.

And I just realized how long this post has become... Wow... Ok so I hope that helped :P

You have no idea how much help this is. I'm definitely going to talk to him. I'm not gonna bother with my sister. I don't think she'll use it. Thanks man. I think he'll end up liking the Inferno(T) as well.

See, I drip, I guess im hardcore!I built a case out of an old plastic card box... Actually I made it out of the plastic box from a deck of AF cards from hookahjohn!. anyway, with a little styrofoam and an exacto knife I managed to fit;
1-10ml bottle of fluid
2-LR attys
1- titanium drip tip
1-510 battery
1-910 battery
1 emergency USB charger
and ...
1 cloth for cleanup when I drip on myself.

everything I have was purchased from totally wicked, they have a website too, just google it, its pretty long.
Mine is only Totally Wicked because theres a TW location not far from home. The vast majority of ecigs come from china and are rebranded when they get here. One to stay away from though is the green smoke or green stick, it's junk. There are a few that are different and really cool but they get real pricey real quick.
