Allstar
So I am planning to get another tattoo. This one will be on my right side. I am planning it to start high towards the back. It will be a treble clef with a music staff that will wind down my side. It will be rather large and finishing at my waist. The whole thing will be on an angle, it will have to bends in it almost like a Z. Towards the end the staff will expand and the notes will almost float off the staff. What I want opinions on is the following, would you use the notes of a piece of music that means something to you or just random notes to show your love for all music. Thanks ahead of times for your opinions.
Allstar
Oh just to add some perspective. If I go with a song that mean something to me, it would be the opening lines to one of the following; Damnit by Blink 182 or The Freshman by the Verve Pipe. Reasoning behind Damnit is the fact when I was younger I went to a middle school that was mostly black and listened to rap anyone that didn't like rap listened to heavy metal. That was it. No other options. Then one day over xmas break I saw the music video for Damnit. That was it. I was hooked started getting into punk music. I realized how to be myself and individual and not care about what others think. This new basis of thought helped me through a lot of rough areas in my life much more than I care to explain. The Freshman is my favorite song to play on guitar. It calms me down when I am angry or upset. The words help show the side of me that is constantly let down by most people I meet. I believe in the good of other people and sometimes I am more generous with those around. So I guess then side that gets sad and depressed when I am let down. It is funny that these two songs seem to bring balance to me.
Babs
I've always wanted a (small) tat myself, but the trouble is I'm so damn indecisive and I change my mind a LOT so... =/ I think that tattoos should always have some meaning, even if it's something simple like you really like fruit so you get an apple tattoo (ok, shit example...) but yeah, I think you should get notes from a song that means something to you. It makes the tat that much cooler.

Allstar
Yep I have to go through the pain of getting it on my side, to balance me out. I hate being uneven. This will be my fourth.
Arcane
If you're one of those people that think tattoos should mean something, then get the notes to the song. If you're like me and just like the art, then it doesn't really matter. Also, if anyone does see it...you'll have to go through the whole "What does that mean?" explanation. If you're ok with saying, "Nothing. It just looks nice" and have people look at you like you're nuts, then I'd just get notes that actually look good together. vendetta_revived
Well if you are getting the notes, then why not something that actually means something to you? You will definitely cherish it more and as Arcane pointed out, it won't end up being an awkward conversation piece.
TheyCallMeDave
Lol I'll pass tony, one side tattoo was enough for me... BUT, if you're crazy enough to get the other done...lol... I would say that if those songs meant so much to you, getting the actual melody tattoo'd on your side wouldnt' be required., Get a visual that looks cool. Some of the best songs out there don't look very cool on sheet music. Draw up a melody, no matter what it is, that looks really awesome. You aren't getting this tattoo for other people, you're getting it for you. Unless you plan to bump your head and forget the songs, why the need to literally get the notes on your side? You know what it means, the meaning is there. Now bring out the art in it! Again, just an opinion.

Remember that your body has natural lines/curves...nice on paper doesn't always equate to nice on the body. Edited April 8, 2011 by Arcane
MichaelLCP
In my opinion, if you are getting something that will be on your body forever, then it should be something that means a lot to you. So I would go with music to a song. Plus it would be awesome!

[/quote] Agreed, As much as I LOVE my jellyfish tattoo, when I stretch to one side like I'm preparing for a marathon or something, My jellyfish stretches into something of a phallic symbol... Oh well. If your artist is patient, he will give you the temorary purple ink design and let you stretch, look from side to side, see what it looks like, and then make changes to it if needed. However, my two artists have always done a good estimate right off the bat for me, so it's to eaches own.
Allstar
Ya they did that for my left side. I do a lot of research before I settle on an artist before I get in the chair.
