Matching A Vase And Stem...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,
I'm in the market for a new hookah and am heavily considering buying a separate stem and vase... but am a little concerned that they won't be compatible. I haven't picked out what I want yet for sure, but are there any guidelines I can use/things to look for to make sure that the vase and stem fit together?

[[Sorry for double-post, but it's too late to edit]]
Here's what I'm thinking about - measurements are given on each... and it seems like it might work to me, but I'm worried about a 9" downstem (plus length of hub thing) with a 10.5" tall vase, and the 1.6" diameter on the stem and the 1.75" opening on the vase... it seems like a small difference, but I don't know if it's enough of one to make it not airtight.

Great! I ordered those two items. I forgot to factor in the gasket. Look for a "omg help it's leaking" or a "omg help the stem is too long" thread coming to a theater near you...

Haha, you should be good on the downstem length. As for the gasket, if it's too small and you need it bigger, take the gasket off of the shank, then wrap a few layers of electrical tape where the gasket would go. Replace the gasket back on over the tape and test the fitting. Adjust as needed, removing or adding tape, 'til it's just perfect. Now if the gasket is too big, first try wetting it to see if it'll fit in tightly. If it won't, then you can sand it down until it's the right size.

I do have the vase, waiting on the stem and such to get here and then I'm going to make a thread in the "show off your stuff" area. :) I'm pleased with the vase though, looks great. Can't wait to see it with everything else!

So I got my shank in the mail today, and it looks great! Matches the vase nicely and stuff, but as I feared, it's a little wobbly in there. It's not a perfect fit, and there isn't a rubber grommet down there like I was expecting. I really would like to avoid ordering a grommet if I can (I'm all set on coals, shisha, etc. and don't want to pay to ship it if I can avoid it) -- is this a job for electrical tape?

I haven't gotten a chance to smoke it yet, so this might be a non-issue, but I just thought I'd throw it out there and try and get some pre-emptive feedback. :)

I use nothing but a "paper towel grommet" on one of my nours, and it works better than any rubber grommet I've used. Using a rubber grommet is more convenient for sure, but putting a few strips of wet paper towel on isn't exactly a hassle.

I use electrical tape to keep my KM stem in that style base. works great, it is a bit wobbley, but that's fine with me.
