spaceboy
Hey, this is my first post. I basically joined just to get the word out, please don't think this is spam, I'm really just genuinely into this. I smoke hookah for about an hour or two a day, and I know it can't be good for me, but I could not find any definitive studies for just how bad it is. Last month my gf found an ad on Craigslist about a study and I called in and started it this week. The doctor there told me I'm the first participant and asked me if any of my friends might be interested, but I'm the only avid smoker I know. So I decided to join a few message boards to spread the word (and also to talk about hookahs). I don't know if I should post a link, I got banned from another forum for spamming, and that's not what I'm trying to do. There is a good stipend for participating, but mostly I think we need to get some information about the health risks. It's a legitimate study in a respiratory research clinic run by a prestigious university. If you're interested, just google "Hookah study Cornell" and the first links are from the college. Again, I'm not affiliated with Cornell or advertising, I'm a kid from Brooklyn who's just into finding out what is going on in our lungs. If the administrators have any problems with this post, please let me know how to get this information out properly.

I would bet that some of the studies don't even involve skilled hookah users... and they just overpack an egyptian and stick 4+ partially lit instant lights (mmm toxic) and hook it up to one of those vacuum machines they use for cigarettes and draw constantly, causing the coals to glow red hot and burn the tobacco to a charred crisp... I could see a vapor analysis easily going very wrong since it takes so much skill to properly pack and heat manage... If this study is a legitimate, unbiased, study with no political motivation involved... involving skilled hookah users.. then i am interested in seeing the results. Tom1
Never mind the above post, I forgot Cornell med had campuses in Manhattan too. It would be cool to help seeing as I'm only an hour away but I would need more info on it.
spaceboy
I'll ask about the funding. The study isnt to test the emission of carcinogens, they're testing my lungs. Last week I went in and took some breathing tests and the next step is to have a bronchoscopy, where they take a cell sample from inside my lungs (using a small tube with a camera, while I'm asleep). They also are trying to factor in if you are or have ever smoked cigarettes or anything else, etc. I got $50 for the initial exam and $200 if I choose to do the bronchoscopy, which I probably will.
