Al Fakher Heat Management

Recommended Posts

So I just started smoking Al Fakher... I've been having some heat issues. First off it will take me awhile to light it, then when I do get it lit the clouds are light or it just gets to harsh. I've been using coconara coals usually cut in half. I'm still having problems. Any tips?

I saw your video review and went back to look at how you packed it. I don't use coconaras (they should be arrive at my door tomorrow though) but it looks like the holes that are punched in the foil are really big. I do it the way Chris does:

the trial and error way is the way to go. it is all about finding what works for your session. i haven't smoked AF in almost 5 or 6 months, so i dont really know what works for me on AF anymore. just experiment, and then you'll find what will work.

report back here, too, on the different methods you try, cause it is always nice to share ideas

Well I am trying to see your video review but the damn youtube is not loading!

I saw that you're using a standard mya bowl though, and when I use that one with AF, I simply sprinkle the tobacco into the bowl making sure that it is evenly distributed and that there are no clumps till it is 2-3 mm above the rim and then I just tap it with my palm to make it nicely flush with the rim without actually pressing it down.

I use 2 layers of foil if I don't have my regular thick one, otherwise just one and start poking holes with a small safety pin from the very boundary in a circular pattern....and I poke a shit load of holes...(will upload the pic in a few minutes when I load a bowl), to the very center. Then blow from the bottom of the bowl to make sure that it is breathing right and that does it.

Never used coconaras so don't know how hot do they burn so you will probably have to experiment with that.

PS : I don't use the mya bowl that much though since it is too deep and I've had much better results with wide egyptians that are pretty shallow,

Sorry for the chink in the bowl. It's a cheap ceramic that my younger bro dropped as he was trying to take it off the hookah (He didn't think it'd be hot :pardon:)

Here is a pic from the side that shows how high I pack it.

And here is the hole pattern I use.

Never had any problem with using AF like this regarding clouds and harshness.

Vendetta, that bowl is disgusting...
I do the same method though, pat it down lightly till its flush

I know lol! I use it because it is the first bowl I ever owned! I wasn't even very knowledgeable about cleaning the bowls when I started and the black crust formed in a couple of night's time, and it was too bloody late after that.

Yeah I usually pack mine the same way, I'm not sure why it happens. I'll figure it out soon enough though. AF is so good I don't want this to ruin my experience lol.

What kind of hole pattern do you use mate? I've tried big holes, small holes, less holes and more holes (and the combinations there within) and the above seems to work best for me. Super thick clouds and requires less management of coals.

If i got it right, you are using a MYA bowl? Get a phunnelbowl ASAP! Especially for AF. The MYA bowl is just crap, far too deep. Its known for being impossible to get to smoke right. Preferably get a tangiers phunnel (small), better quality and heat distribution than the chinese ripoffs.
