Starwind
I have a friend who recently bought her first hookah and an extra hose. It's a very small hookah. When we first smoked with it we couldn't take a hard pull without water going up the hose (the extra she bought). It was longer and possibly slightly wider than the one that come with it. It also had an odd feel when hitting it softer. The hose that it came with worked fine, but it makes me curious as to how hose length and diameter affect the hookah. ilikemyusername
A wider guage hose makes for a nicer pull, more airflow. as for the water in the hose, try less water in the vase.

jorlyfish
As far as I know, the only thing hose length affects is how far away the hookah can be without worrying about knocking stuff over or pulling the hose out of the port. I had a small "desktop" hookah (a MYA Bambino) and chose a shorter hose for it because there was no point in having a 6' long hose when the pipe was only 2 feet away. However, sometimes I'd smoke with other people, with the hookah on the floor, and the hose would sometimes pop out of the port because there wasn't enough slack to move the hose that far back and forth, if that makes sense... ilikemyusername nailed it for hose diameter. Think of it like trying to drink from a regular straw vs. one of those coffee stirrer "straws" (or a regular straw vs. those huge straws they use for bubble tea) - it is much easier to use the wider straw. Starwind
I just found it really strange that one hose worked perfectly (the smaller one) while the other either sucked water up the hose or had an odd pull. It was an extremely small vase though. There was only a few inches between filled to the top and not getting the stem in the water.
ahhhdam
Was the 2nd hose the same type of hose but just longer? Or did it look completely different? If what you say is true about the 2nd hose might having a wider guage then you could of also sucked up water because of sucking too hard. Because the 1st hose is smaller you couldn't suck too hard because of the restriction of the smaller guage hose. If that being the case as ilikemyusername said just put less water in the vase. Describe the odd pull with the 2nd hose. Was it restricted? If so it might be because there weren't enough holes in the bowl. I have a cheap china acrylic and this happened to me before. The hose it came with the usual ones they give in cheap chinese made hookahs with a small metal tip worked fine. When I used a nammor hose on it I got water in the hose. It was because I could suck harder (that's what she said) and pull the water up and also because compared to the smaller hose I needed more holes up top causing me to suck harder and making a vaccum in the vase shooting water up the hose. ahhhdam
If the normal hose your talking about is the ones they ship in cheap knock offs then it probably has a metal coil inside. The damage over time would be that the coil will rust up and when the time comes you will soon be getting bits and pieces of that in your mouth when pulling. Good news after that is you get to buy a new washable hose YAY! Or you can mod it.
Starwind
Yeah, if I end up investing in some hoses it will be a couple Narbish hoses most likely, but that won't be for a good while down the road considering my lack of funds.

UltimateHookah
As far as length is concerned not too sure it's a huge issue unless you are comparing a tiny one to a huge one......let me explain. There are KM's and washable Egyptians that are all high 60 inches to low 70 inches in length. I don't think they vary too much in performance, but the hookah you are discussing probably comes with a much shorter, straw like diameter gauge, and that's where you will see a huge difference. Then again, the much smaller hookahs can be tipped over by heavier hoses. So maybe time to upgrade?
method
longer hose = colder smoke , same as stem .

My hookah shouldn't have a problem with a longer/wider hose.
No, it wasn't leaking. It was inconsistent. Almost like the bubbling was affecting it.
yeah. when water gets in the hose, it may get sucked up into an area where the hose dips down, creating a p-trap effect - and you cannot undue this except by removing the hose from the hookah entirely and draining that shit. get a nuhose. washable, clean, and REALLY cheap. i keep one in the car for when i go to lounges/cafes and one at home - originally for use with my smaller, lighter hookahs, but since the hose is so good, i seriously use it with everything now - i actually prefer the nuhose to narbs and even km hoses. CarePolice
I've been using a couple Narbish hoses, they're really good. Mine has only now started to develop leaks and we've used it three times daily at least for a year. Kinda heavy though. Hose width affects pull, makes it easier, but length does almost nothing but allow you to sit farther from the hookah, which can be nice depending on how many people you smoke with, or where your table is.
