Trumpet Bases And Heat

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

So as you all know I got my sexay pipe last week and i love it to death! One thing I have notice though is that shisha gets a little more warm and I attribute that to the trumpet base the stem is on. As I understand it, smoke cooling occurs from three things: the distance of the smoke from the top of the water line to the stem, the temperature of the water, and the amount of surface area the smoke is touching. The problem herein lies with a trumpet vase is that they require a higher water level than a traditional base coupled with the fact that the base gets narrower towards the top, covering 2 of the perceived 3 factors that cool smoke. Really the only option I can see is to somehow extend the bottom part of the stem a couple inches so that it can go deeper into the vase where the base is wider. I'm looking for some suggestions on how to accomplish this or any other ways to achieve cooler smoke aside from add ice for every smoking session. Put on your thinking caps guys and gals, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

anyone have any experience with welding and such? I am thinking of having a friend band saw off the bottom 2 inches of the stem, buy a 2 inch steel or brass extension and have it welded on, then the part we cut off welded on the other end. it should extend the stem enough, but I am not sure what to buy/and hazards risks. based on the lack of experience with this problem I am gonna assume no one has done a project like this one?

I already told you this on TC, but this has made me curious about if I will notice the same when I get mine. I'll let you know once I get it.

Also, I'll get you the measurement on my OG Tri's downstem...

im not sure. lets say my stem goes an inch and a half or so into the water, if i put a diffuser on it, how much farther down is the waterline gonna be

Well, the diffuser wouldnt add much if anything to the length of the downstem, HOWEVER, it would break up the bubbles and possibly cool down the smoke a bit more. That's what it advertises at least. I use one, but i don't have a trumpet base so I don't seem to have that problem.
It does make for a quieter smoke though.

measurements for chris

downstem (just the skinny part): 7 and 1/2 inches
total going into the base (including the part where the downstem is attached): 9 inches
vase height: 14 and 1/4 inches tall
total depth the downstem reaches into the base: 8.5inches.

my stem reaches just where the base starts to get bigger, so if i can add 2 inches (insert penis joke here), it would give me cooler smoke i think. now to find someone that can weld....

Here is some info on welding/ brazing different metals together.

I would just take the hookah completely apart and replace the downstem with a longer piece of 304 stainless.

Id use 304L stainless because it it is more heat resistant then 304 stainless. It will be a little bit tougher to weld but if he is certified then it shouldn't be a problem. KM's arn't welded together. They are brazed so you could even have him to that which is just a mapp torch and a brazing rod.

sounds like the best/easiest thing to do would be cut off the whole downstem and solder on a whole new one. where would you get a half inch tube of steel like that?
