MichaelLCP
So i got my Tangiers yesterday and a small phunnel bowl. I also have a medium but Its too big to use for myself. So when I pack the small bowl, how many coals should I be using? Also what kind of coal? Also when I opened it up it smelled perfect and just like it was supposed to. I still let it acclimate for a couple hours. But its a little harsh to smoke and I can't seem to get the clouds. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Any tips will help! Thanks guys! Zildjian
it varies from person to person and bowl to bowl. what kinda of coals do you have? i would say start with 2, if it needs more, light a 3rd and put it on its smallest side, if it needs more, put the 3rd on its bigger side. its kind of a guess and check sorta thing
MichaelLCP
I've been using Coconaras. But I also heard eric uses silver japanese coals. I have some of those too.
king_lunchb0x
usually on a tang small i use 3 halves..works pretty well next time try japanese coal cause they break apart easier. start of breaking up 1 finger coal into a bunch of thin slivers ...then put a few pieces around the bowl. Just keep adding just a little bit and smoke for a minute or two. You should hit a point where its too harsh...thats the wall. Taker off the last piece and you are set. If its no flavor or no smoke still, then its either bowl packing is wrong or acclimation is not 100%

vendetta_revived
I haven't got my tangiers yet so I can't help with this, (I'll probably be putting my own questions forth once I get it) but if you can get some pictures up of how you're packing it, then the experts can help you a lot. I've been doing some research on packing it myself and so I am ready when I get it, and people. please correct me if I am wrong but you basically pack it really tight in a phunnel upto the rim of the bowl, like overpack it and then push it down with the foil when you put it on. Also, all the people who I've seen in the reviews smoking it just give it a good stir up in a tupperware tub before packing so that juices are consistent in the entire tub, and poke 3 rings of holes starting from the outer edge. A hole right in the centre is a personal preference though, so you will have to see if you like it better with it or without. Coals are a trial and error for most people but I've read that 3 halves of coconaras on the edge of the bowl get it going pretty good, and you can always take a half off if it gets too harsh for you. Good luck man! Edited April 30, 2011 by vendetta_revived
MichaelLCP
Yeah I'll smoke later this afternoon and post pictures. I stirred up all of the shisha this morning and it does smell much stronger than it did yesterday. Maybe I just didn't let it sit long enough. TheyCallMeDave
Michael, here are some things (as a guy who just recently started getting his tangiers to smoke how he likes it) that I thought of (or shoudl ahve thought of) when I was in your situation: - When in doubt, pack the tobacco more densely. - when in doubt, remove some heat. A whole cole, edge them out, put them on their tops, what have you. - Don't watch one video or tutorial and think you ahve it made. Some of the best bowls of noir I've smoked from, were prepared by people who, apart from tight packing and little heat, did it COMPLETELY their own way. The creator, Eric has a video, that peopel seem to like. I found his video most useful, along with Michard's, and sort of combined the two to a technique I liked most. Hell, you might even find that you'll come up with your own sytem. Long story short, don't ever stop studying technique, tips, or styles. - Don't ever, EVER think you can cut corners with Tangiers. If it smells funny, don't smoke it. If you skimped out on a few hours of acclimation because you were excited to smoke your first bowl, don't smoke it. If you are tired of weak clouds and want to push the coals in, WAIT. Hookah is all about patience and accuracy, and the LAST tobacco you want to take shortcuts with is Tangiers. Just my very lengthy two cents. As for your Jap silverlights, I would try those next. Eric highly reccomends them for Noir Tangiers, due to their low heat output. This will let you apply more heat to the bowl evenly on the surface, without as much heat as regualr coconut coals. However, plenty of people use coco's just fine. Just an opinion. Hope this helped, Dave

Next I'm going to try the silverlights, as you said eric recommends them. Once I smoke I'll let you all know how it turns out. I think I may try my Kashmir Peach today. WISH ME LUCK! Clouds were big and it tasted fantastic. Threw a wind cover on 3 halfs of a coco and it was perfect. Still have yet to try Jap coals though. I think now it doesn't matter which coal you use, because you get the idea of about how much heat it can take Edited May 2, 2011 by king_lunchb0x
