kfranki
Hey guys, I've read through the pages of this and several other forums to check out the "Tangiers Help!"-Threads but it all did not help me a lot.. Im from Germany and ordered a good amount of Tangiers. Unfortunately I don't think that I get it smoking perfectly. I've acclimated it in different ways: I tried simply leaving the tub open for about 4-6 hours and stirring it up several times and I've tried the 4/20 method someone mentioned. The stuff smells good so I don't think I've made any mistakes there. When it comes to packing the bowl I'm not sure. I've seen a lot of videos and tutorials. Most of the time I do it like Eric and m1tchard mixed together. I pack the tobacco quite densely in the bowl and give it a good press with my palm so that the bowl is evenly filled up to the rim. About 1mm left to the foil. I poke the holes just like m1tchard with a toothpick and a lot of them. When I put on the coals (usually i start with 2 cocos and then upgrade to a third) I hear the tobacco burning and I give it about 2-3 minutes to heat up. At this time the sound of burning tobacco (and disappointment) is gone and I take the first puffs. Now here are the symptoms: Nearly every Tangiers tastes similiar: not harsh (so I can pull it straight into the bottom of my lung) but very much like burned tobacco and coals. Surely I can taste some differences between Horchata and Passionfruit but it's not very intense. I use a Tangiers Medium Phunnel. After about 1 hour the tobacco has expanded and now touches the foil. So does the tobacco have to burn at the beginnig of the session? How may coals should I begin with (Our cococha coals here in Germany burn rather hot!)? Should there be a little space between tobacco and foil? What do I do wrong? Best regards.
kvtaco17
Try breaking.up the first two coals in halves instead of using 3 whole coals...
vendetta_revived
[s] Have you tried cutting your coconaras in half and start with 2-3 halves at the very edges of the bowl? [/s]damn you beat me. Edited May 8, 2011 by vendetta_revived
Matto
Try filling the bowl up more, when I load the bowl my foil is touching the shisha. The tobacco doesn't necessarily have to heat up before you smoke, it just makes the beginning of the session more enjoyable. kfranki
Ok thanks so far guys. Never thought of breaking my coals but I'll give that a try tonight.
king_lunchb0x
wow a tang medium has to hold a lot of tobacco. Alot of times, that "harsh taste is more from under acclimated tobacco. like said above pack little more start with split coals, maybe 3 halves (smoke that for about 5 minutes) for a med and then add one half and smoke about 5 minutes. Seems like just too much heat to fast is scorching the tobacco. I actually seem to have better luck just throwing it in a bowl instead of trying to copy their vids. Sidenote: i get flamed for this all the time, but i think you can over acclimate tobacco..I.E. leaving it open for too long will dull the flavor to a point where there is just a hint when smoking. kfranki
I agree with overacclimating - experienced that myself. Ok last night I've tried it with my coals split in half. Worked much much better for me. Thank you guys. Gonna give it another try tomorrow or so. If possible I'll try to report my problems (if still there). Yesterday was good but I think the best is yet to come.
The Greek
Instead of starting a new thread, i figure ill just jack this one im having some problems with my Tang lucid tropical punch. In got it in a shipment with lucid mimon and i just cant get any taste out of the tropical punch. I can get a pretty decent flavor out of the mimon but nothing overwhelming. Im smoking out of a mya qt with a tang small phunnel. I mix it up before each use and its nice and moist. i can get good clouds, usually use 2 ql CH coals but just no taste. The Greek
It smells like tropical punch. Its definitely well acclimated
boludo
you are probably doing one of two things. 1) You are over packing your bowl, or 2) You are using too much heat. Try moving the coals to the edge of the bowl to see if that helps. Cutting the coals in half also helps, but it can be a lot of work. Good luck
The Greek
Im still lost on the over/under packing the bowl. most people say to have the tobacco touching the foil. If so how do you overpack it?
Arcane
ummm, overpacking is when you put too much tobacco in the bowl.

I literally go to about a half inch above the rim of the bowl with Tangiers. Then push it down with your palm..... It should go to about flat. If its mounded, then its probably too much, but its REALLY hard to overload Tangiers, much easier to underload.
