SiberianKiss
There are smoke alarms and heat alarms, no? I have one in my kitchen at school that only goes off if it gets too hot, but the smoke alarm in my bedroom can be set off by all sorts of smoke. MrGuy
no, theres 2 methods. theres ionizing smoke detectors which basically have a small circuit and in the circuit there are 2 plates a few mm apart and on one side is a radioactive substand and on the other is a metal plate. the decompossing radioactive substance (Americum242 i think) decays and the alpha particles hit the metal plate causing a small voltage. Now when smoke gets inbetween the 2 plate, it ionises the alpha particles meaning they dont conduct charge aswell so the smoke detector picks up a difference in voltage across the 2 plates and goes off - Thank you physics classes. The other type of alarm is a visual one. a light or lil laser thingy is shone perpendicular to a light sensor. so naturally, the light doesn't hit the sensor. when smoke particles get in, they reflect the light in different direction and some is picked up by the light sensor, which sets off the alarm...i think. So both alarm have different effictiveness depending on the smokie and particle size. And siberiankiss is right, there are heat detectors. i don't know how cigarette smoke detectors work. A quick google shows that most smoke detevctor alarm things wont go off from cigarette smoke. i don't think it would with hookah unless you blew right onto it. so unless your detector is pretty low down so the smoke doesnt have much time to disipate befor getting to the sensor, you should be alrite. someone try it. I will try it when i get mine too because i suspect it will vary from alarm to alarm. go outside, light up, take a lungful of smoke, run inside and breathe onto the alarm from different distances etc. and see if any set off the alarm. that was if any do, you can know a "safe" distance to smoke from and if not then everyone's happy. SiberianKiss
Oh, I just figured cigs would, because my friends were smoking a j in their dorm room and set off the detector.
MrGuy
It depends. My parents own 4 other houses which we let out to students, and one of the regulations here in the UK i think is they have to be Heat detectors. So everytime we go to one of the houses for maintainence in summer, it always smells of various smokes lol.
SiberianKiss
Haha, that's why I'm glad there's a heat detector in our kitchen/living room in our apartment.
joetuo
I mostly smoke in my house, sometimes out on the back patio if the weather is nice.
gunsboy
Smoke alarms were removed when I moved in. They are useless anyways. I smoke at home (infront of tv) or at friends' places or outside near the ocean front, I wanna smoke shisha while sitting in an outdoors Jacuzzi, but yet to try that.I just gave away two older hookahs to a resturant with a patio here. Now I smoke when I go there. It is right beside my work place. I am planning to drop by there in lunch hour.
nuschultz
The reason pot will set off a smoke detector and a cig generally wont is because of the smokes. Pot smoke doesn't disperse as quickly as a cigarettes smoke would, hence the reason you can hotbox.Cigars will also set off smoke detectors, because of the chemicals the tobacco is treated with. Macho555
I usually smoke in my basement, where I have a little end table. However, I've taken to smoking on my deck while playing chess with my gf and her hookah.
Barnzy02
i smoke in my living room of my apartment. sometimes we take it out in the backyard or i'll move it in to the bedroom every now and then. but usually we'll pop a movie or a cd in and just smoke the hookah. MrGuy
hookah smoke disperses pretty quick, so i could probably get away with it. i'll do some tests lol
Sonthert
I haven't smoked at home in like a year and a half, always at work.

zombiedepot
The lounge experience isn't that great where I'm at so I use my own personal hookah at home. I would take it to a park or something, but then there's the harassment.
gunsboy
For the last two days I went to this resturant with a patio and smoked. It is located in the middle of the business district in downtown. So many people just shake their heads like I am smoking a bong or doing heroin in the middle of the street. Others just smile and wave. Even cops give us the stare when driving by. EvansLight
yea that was the problem at the park. We were worried about cops. For the most part the park goers didnt care, some even talked to us about what it was, for all i know theres now a few more hookah smokers out there After the first cop decided to mess with us, we started just sitting either in the back of his truck, or in the cab. Which brought on hilarity, sometihng rather funny about smoking out a truck....
Calcartman
Always been in my back yard, my friend's back yard, or the back yard of the woman I house-sit for.I will never smoke inside for several reasons, not the least of which is that if I can't sit outside and smoke, I don't want to do it. However, my future locations are definitely the park; and more excitingly my school. In the main quad smoking is allowed (as with several other parts of campus), and people smoke cigs everywhere. So, I figure why not me. I'll bring my hookah, camp in the main quad, and just puff away. I'm sure I'll get a lot of attention, which is always good! shonimus
once I started burning holes in my bedroom's carpet, I started smoking outside. I'm a bit clumsy, so I think this was the way to go.
