New Here, Any Help Is Welcome

Just joined the forums as well as getting into hookah smoking. Im stationed in afghanistan and just got my first hookah, its not terribly made, allthough the downstem already broke, and it took some engineering to fox and get the whole thing smokable again.... thank god for duct tape lawls! my main reason for the post is when we smoke, we dont really get the big thick clouds of smoke i expected, ive searched other sites for tips and tricks to see if maybe im doing something wrong, our rig is about 18" tall, were smoking herbal shisha (blackberry and watermelon are awesome mixed btw), we use ql coals due to lack of burners out here for nattys.... our hose isnt anything to brag about its maybe 2" long, and as basic as it comes i guess.... lol i guess what im really asking is there anyway to get more outta our little ghetto rig of a hookah lol? thanks for any replys.

Hmm...my first suggestion would be to try some other shisha and to play with the water levels in the base. If you don't have much room for air it won't fill with as much smoke sometimes hindering clouds. At least that's what I've noticed.

as far as the water levels i try to keep it about 1/2" to an 1" about the downstem, seems to be plenty of room for air/smoke, least it fills pretty nicely about halfway through our session. ive added milk to the water to see if that actually helped, and no joy.... all the milk did was add an odd taste to the watermellon shisha we smoked. also dont know if itll help but were currently smoking Beamer molasses... havent found the thick clouds they advertise, but the taste is amazing:)

The clouds have a lot to do with the shisha you use, have you or anyone you know ever got big thick clouds with the shisha you're using? have you tried adding more heat to it? Some shishas take a bit of heat to smoke good, others take less heat and get harsh if you put more than required heat on it.

Try adding more coals to see if it gets harsh or not, you can always take em off if it does though. And please don't add milk to the base, it does nothing more than adding a 'wtf' to your cleaning chores. :)

LMAO! as far as thick smoke with this shisha, i couldnt say, ive only really gotten into hookah smoking about a month ago, and in order to get our shisha we have to order it online, have it sent to the house, and have our wives mail it to us lol... so when we get some we tend to get a lot.... like 3 250g tins of the stuff :) just didnt know if it had anything to do with the cheap-o hookah i bought from the bazzar here on our fob lol

It could be the hookah as well, smaller hookahs tend to have narrow stems and narrow hose ports (and obviously narrow hoses. :P). If you are ordering it online though, why not get some nakhla or Al fakher? :)

Here are some trusted vendors.

www.hookahjohn.com
www.thehookahcompany.com

Also, can you get a hookah shipped from home? Doesn't have to be a big ass one, I myself have a mya qt. It's small but has a wide stem and thus smokes very very good.

Here it is : http://hookahjohn.com/MYA-QT-063.htm

Or may be you could get one of them with an acrylic base, and hence eliminate all worries of breaking it. http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-187-mini-mya-hookah.html

If you can't get a hookah shipped for whatever reasons, then just order one of those brands I mentioned and you'd be good. Good luck man!

I am not sure about the hookah you linked to, but i would recommend upgrading to a wide gauge hose

now back to the hookah...what makes you set on that one? Mya's have a great reputation to being sturdy small hookahs if thats what you need(small for storage or transportation)

http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-187-mini-mya-hookah.html <---this is the acrylic that Vendetta was mentioning
just my opinion good luck and let us know wut u decide to get!

No sweat brother.

Wow, that looks cool and has very good user reviews, I personally don't know anything about ivory hookahs though, so may be people who do own them or have used them can give you a clear picture of how they smoke. :)

The ultimate combo bowl also, I have not used personally but as you can see, it has some mixed reviews, if I were to recommend a bowl to you, it'd be a tangiers phunnel bowl. A tangiers small to be precise (it's not really a small and smokes good for about 3 hours). You could get a windscreen for it separately. :) But you can't get that from hookah shisha as they have generic phunnels and not tangiers phunnels. Again, the bowl you've chosen could be good but just that I don't know anything about it, so I hope someone who does does chime in. Happy smoking!

If I had to give you any advice, it would be take the Mya QT. It may look like a small hookah which may not impress you or look like the hookah you were imagining, but trust in the fact good things come in small packages. The QT is a solid pipe, and will hit like a champ when you get it smoking properly.

In regards to the combo bowl, they tend to get the shisha too hot too quick, and the clasp is metal, which means it is a pain to unclasp to add/move/remove coals.

My advice is going to differ from some people here. You're stationed in Afghanistan you say. Smack dab in the middle of the hookah smoking universe. Sure you could order this and that from stateside and shipping wouldn't wreck you to an APO, but I'm kinda wondering why if everything you could possibly want is right around you? Let me say that I do NOT know what access you might have to the local merchants, towns, etc., but i know that if I personally in the middle of the part of the world that invented hookah, I'd be buying everything I could get my hands on locally, and probably even shipping stuff back by the caseload for when I came home.

I'm personally not a Mya fan. Nothing particular against them, I'm just a traditional Egyptian/Syrian type of girl. If you do have access to shopping there, I'd suggest finding a hookah shop and buying a traditional pipe because it's going to cost you almost nothing compared to US pricing. People come home with KM's they paid maybe $20 US for. And probably something like 90% of the tobacco is made in the middle east, so again, why shop US? Most of us who try the designer-candy flavor types of tobacco end up going back old school to Al Fakher, Nakla, etc. All of which are made in the Middle East. So drop me down anywhere in the ME, and I'm going to be hailing a cab for the hookah shop before I even make a dent in the jet lag.

@ Rani- heh i hear what your saying, believe me.... the sad thing is im stationed on a relativly small fob in the south eastern part of afghanistan, out in the middle of nowhere.... sadly were not allowed to leave the wire (not so friendly types out here) and the stuff they sell in the bizzar is so cheaply made, the hookah i did buy here from the bizzar already broke(downstem snapped in half) the vase isnt all to good on the eyes, it still smokes, but just barely.... after about 4 sessions on it, the metals already starting to rust, then again you do get what you pay for right. If i had access to an actual hookah shop id prolly be in heaven. Also as far as the tobacco goes, our unit chief and fob rules, has made it illegal to smoke any other tobacco you cant buy from the px here... leaving me with my cigs, and whatever else we get off the net. reasons for this are, apparently theres been an outbreak of people smokeing the shisha they sell here at the bizzars and going home and failing drug tests. just kinda shows that no matter how nice some people may seem, they might still be out to get ya lol. Also on a side note, and not hookah related for everyone who is interested yes i am in the Army, as an air traffic controller. (so you see, failing a drug test isnt really an option for me lawl) as far as all the comments and suggestions on the mya QT, or various other pipes, i think i might keep looking, the Qt may very well be the route i go, i like the idea of a bigger downstem and wider hoses, that just seems like a gimmie when it comes to a good smoke, and what will prolly happen is when i place my order, im going to have it sent to the house that way when i go home in august, itll be there waiting lol.... not sure which id be more happy to see, my wife, kids, dogs, ps3, or the hookah LAWL!!!! Thanks to everyone that has replyed to my posts, Good smoking all!

Just a quick update... first off thanks to everyone who has replied to my little post here. Second ive decided to go ahead and order the mya qt so itll be waiting on me when i get home, still trying to decide on the shisha tho.... and lastely, being how im kinda stuck with this cheapo ghetto rigged hookah i got from the bizzar, ive been looking into how to get more out of it. well last night i tried something completely different, i packed the bowl differently, kept the same ammount of water (JUST water... no milk lawls) used 3 of our micro mini coals and BAM! the best thickest smoke ive gotten out of this hookah yet!!!! when i went to clean up i also noticed that all the shisha was burnt instead of just the top layer, never had any harsh taste to it till the end of the coals, it drew pretty well the entire time, i was so proud of myself i figured id let everyone know. lol Thanks again to all, will post pics of the ghettofied hookah soon, and of the new qt when i get it as well! Cheers!
