Yes, it's a hand fan. How it works? You just flap it, like you'd use a magazine as a hand fan if it's too hot and humid, and I don't think it has anything to do with hookah, may be it was just too hot.

mu'assal is a flavoured tobacco mixture for women, isnt it?

Ok, before everyone over reacts we are running into a cultural thing. In some cultures the men smoke Tombac and the easier to smoke flavoured stuff is considered for the women. This is nothing to be offended by, merely a cultural thing.

Thought i'd jump in now before this got to where i knew it was going.

As for the fan, it looks like it is highly stylized just like the hookah. Probably not accurate depictions of actual items.

Exactly! Even here, the flavoured tobacco is used mostly by people of my age. The older folks still smoke tombac. As for the fan, we have very similar designs here, but in plastic these days....a few years ago they were easily available in wood and jute work.

i'm not too terribly sure, but my cousin used to date a persian guy, and he would say that his grandmother would smoke ghaylan as if it were some spiritual experience or something...we never talked about it in detail because i was a lot younger then and was kinda weirded out by that...
