gigi
Hello! Im really trying to do some research to how bad shisha is for us. I understand that we arnt actually burning the shisha and only heating it. But how come when I take the foil off after a session the shisha is black?
vendetta_revived
That's not burnt, but cooked. If it had been burnt, you'd find ash after taking the foil off. Hint: Cigarettes burn and turn to ash.

Sometimes using nak ill find of bit burnt pieces that are starting to ash. There is a never ending debate over this topic though, "studies" say that hookah produces more tar than a cig but the argument is that of the quality of tar. Hookah tobacco's tar is just basically the glycerin in aerosol form, compared to actual tobacco leaves burning (in a cig) makes tar. Starwind
What all studies have been done on this? I've always been interested in learning about it. I always hear people say hookah doesn't harm your health which I'm quick to tell them they're wrong. But, I know others who thanks to the news say it's just as bad as smoking which I don't believe is true either. I'd like to know where it falls in the inbetween though. UltimateHookah
I'm interested in seeing some real studies. Everything I've read has seemed too extreme. There is just not that much literature out there. In fact, there are so many variables to smoking hookah, like, brand of tobacco, type of coals, how clean are the hose and hookah.
besos
I've read the tobacco intake and smoke is very damaging to your esophagus. Hookah isn't as detrimental as cigarettes but it is in no way not unhealthy. How do you pack your bowls? As of lately, I've been packing it a little more than halfway but just enough so it doesn't touch the foil. Now it smokes a lot better since it never gets that burnt taste. When I remove the foil, my shisha isn't black like it usually is. Before, the top layer used to come in contact with a foil burning it, It looks like it was vaporized because it's just dried out. â€On
I've read the tobacco intake and smoke is very damaging to your esophagus.
This is an interesting thought, but for those of us who marathon smoke regularly, lighter packs are a bit harder to accomplish without doing multiple bowls. I will be giving this a try tonight with my phunnel to see how it works out for me. As for my thoughts on how bad shisha is for us, I think it depends on the brand, the flavor (which also depends on the brand and how they achieve that flavor), how wet the shisha is, how you inhale, how long you smoke for, how often you smoke, how you pack the bowl, how many coals you use, how clean you keep things, and, the most often overlooked in my opinion, the quality of water you use in your bowl. I don't mean to say if you're not using distilled, purified, filtered water you are an idiot...actually just the opposite. If you water has natural (flavorless) impurities in it, it is more likely to attach to and pick up particles from the smoke as it travels through the water. This is why water that has been ran through a Brita filter and used for smoking does not get as dirty. That water IS your filter, and the more stuff it picks up, the better. I've tried all kinds of different filters you can attach to the base or the hose end (charcoal, cotton batting, wood chips, etc), and in the end, they all KIND of work, but most of them harshly effect the taste of the hookah, especially the charcoal filter ones (fyi: a charcoal filter is what is in a brita filter). I have toyed with maybe adding something to the water to help pull impurities from the smoke as it passes through, but, for me, the more you add to your setup, the more factors you have to account for in deciding how healthy/unhealthy it is for you. Nobody does this because they want to improve their health. We smoke because we like it. I think one of the biggest issues we face is not how much tar or nicotine or whatever we are inhaling, but rather the lack of oxygen we are inhaling. Oxygen deprivation is the hugest detriment to smoking hookah, and If it wouldn't blow up my house and light stuff on fire, I'd use some kind of setup to get oxygen rich air pulling through my hookah. I tried packing with about half the shisha i normally use in my phunnel bowl and was getting garbage clouds, and had to use way more heat than I normally use, but as soon as i put a tea light mod on (no other changes), i was getting drastically better clouds. I'm going to play with this a bit more, but going on an hour it's still smoking great, so it's definitely a winner in my books.
