Acclimating Tangiers?

Recommended Posts

Ok,
So I just got my order in a few days ago. I am so excited to try it out, but first I have to acclimate it, like I have read. I have read countless threads, basically anything with the word "Tangiers" in it to get a better idea of what to do and prepare myself. It appears though that no matter how much you read, sometimes you just have to experience it.

First I tried to acclimate the Blue Gum Ball LUCID because I have heard that those dont need much acclimation. Also, I would be able to get an idea of how the Lucid smells to be my target for the regular type. Unfortunately, upon opening, the Lucid did not smell anything like usable. Very BBQ-sauce-esque. Next, I tried to acclimate the Summer Solstice Celebration. It smelled strongly of soy sauce. It was just the regular line of Tangiers.

However after over 5 hours of them being left out, the Lucid still smells very strongly of BBQ. I have read that the Lucid line needs little if any acclimation and from the batch I have, it seems to be the opposite. The regular type tangiers started to smell "usable" or sweet before the lucid. It just seems like they are taking forever!

They are being stored in shallow, wide, tupperware containers. If anyone could give input on what Im doing wrong I would really appreciate it!!!

Thanks,
Glen

It takes time, but is worth it in the end! Try using the 4-20 method. Leave it open and stir it a couple times during a 4hr period then close it up for about 20. After a day or two it should be ready to go. Also try to acclimate it around the time you would normally smoke it so that conditions will be similar.

I was planning on doing the 4/20 method, but I thought that the tobacco had to be rid of the BBQ/Soy Sauce smell before sealing up.

Anyway, I just put lids on em after sitting out for around 6 hours. The Summer Solstice I think will turn out well, it has a fairly sweet smell, but when I put the lid on the Blue Gum Ball, it still had a very strong BBQ smell.... Is it ok to have the lid on it for 20 hours even with the smell?

I've had the lids on with the bbq/soy sauce smell and it still acclimated fine. I think it really depends on your local climate, you may have to experiment to find out what works best for you

All I have to say about it is stir. Stir a lot!

Exactly.

Did you stir it well at least a few times while acclimating?

Maybe try smoking it anyways despite the 'bbq/soysauce smell' It may smoke fine.

I prefer to acclimate small batches at a time (no more than i would use in several days) and leave the rest in the original bags with AnyLock bag sealers for an airtight seal. When I acclimate, I spread the tobacco out in a thin layer in a bowl or on foil stirring several times over the course of around 4 hrs...which has almost always been enough for me. Whatever acclimated tobacco i don't use, i cover it and then acclimate it again for at least a couple hours before i use it on another day.

I used to have issues getting good sessions--bad clouds, not much flavor, harshness, etc... i thought it was due to insufficient acclimation... when in fact it was improper packing/heat management. It is easy to underpack the bowl and it is easy to scorch the tobacco with Cocos, they are so hot after you get them going. It seems to work better to let them rest for a minute or 2 after getting them lighted... or at least balance them on the very edge of the bowl until they cool down a bit... and be patient for the bowl to warm up...

Its all about location, but then again you can even have issues in the perfect humidity. Tangiers is made in san diego and I have heard stories of needing to acclimate it here. Some flavors need the acclimation, just let it sit out for a while.

some people just don't need to acclimate tang, i have always had to do it to mine. Except on a few occasions. Lucid should acclimate rather easily compared to noir. After the 2-3 hour mark should have been ready. Unless you live in a really high humidity location. But still should work after several hours. Close it up and start it again after 20 hours. There is such thing as leaving it open to long and the flavor dulls. BGB should have smelled strong out of the bag though. Just don't give up,

It must just be the area I am in. Maryland is quite high humidity. I have stirred it a lot, exposed it to the air more, and left the lids on. Both smell quite nicely now! Thanks for the help guys!

Im struggling to pack my Crown Micro Funnel correctly though.... I cant seem to get the right amount of tobacco/coals. It is either really harsh, or doesnt burn enough and results in really weak clouds.
I gotta say, so far I am not entirely impressed with my purchases. Although I know that it is just trial and error and mistakes on my part that lead to the negative feeling, since there are so many people who support the products.

Thanks again!

How are you packing it? What coals?

With tangiers, try adding enough tobacco so that when you press it flat and even it is at a level approx. between the center spire and the outer rim with a density similar to the original bag. Make sure to use HD foil with 2-3 rings of holes (lots of holes.) If you are using cocos, I suggest using two halves or 3 quarters (quarters are slightly more optimal IMO, but don't last as long as the two halves) and letting them cool ~1 minute before putting them on. Put them on the outer edge and let the bowl warm up for a few minutes before the 'tweak cycle.'

Keep at it, you will find the sweet spot.

man reading all this im kinda unsure about even trying tangiers, never knew there was so much work involved in the preperation, it makes me curious would you need to acclimate other shishas, like AF SB ect ect..?

No you don't need to acclimate any other shisha. The thing is that tangiers is made differently and it needs to come to an equilibrium with the surrounding environment to smoke good. It does sound like a lot of effort, but the popular opinion is that it's worth it. My bowls of AF smoke for 1.5 hours at best before losing flavour, but it's not uncommon to see people saying that their tangiers bowls smoke good in excess of 3-4 hours at a go.

I've acclimated other brands before, but it isn't normal to need it.

Like hookah in general, once you figure out the technique, it is a breeze... and totally worth it.
