Foil Punchers

Recommended Posts

They are crap. I bought one on Ebay, and it is poo. The points are not sharp at all (being plastic), and you end up tearing the foil half the time. Hole size seems ok if you get it right, but the pattern doesn't take up a lot of space (MAYBE half dollar size), so if you've got anything bigger than a medium sized bowl, you end up with a lot of unpoked foil. If that is even a word. CRAP I SAY!

I want to make my own. Like take a piece of plastic and make a pattern using the metal parts of thumbtacs or w/e... it'd work because it's sharp enough... just don't know how much work it'd be to make something like this.

Yeah they will destroy pre-cut foil sheets on a tangiers bowl, unless you hold the foil really tight around the side you're punching. Its not hard to do but you might ruin some foil the first time or two. On normal sized bowls, I've never had a problem.

The poker stick on my tongs was too big for me until I sharpened it on a bench grinder. I've also had good luck with a LOT of holes made with a little needle from a diabetes testing kit. I found I needed to put 4 or five bigger holes along with the neddle holes, though.

Too bad the forums search function is acting up right now, I'd search for foil punchers because I posted pictures of my homemade one I made a few years back. It was pretty much a bunch of pushpins glued onto a round piece of cardboard I cut out. It worked well enough, but you just need to measure out the cardboard to fit your size bowl.I'll try and take some new pictures and upload them here when I get some spare time. Hopefully later tonight :)

Well, found my homemade holepuncher and just snapped a couple quick pics.So if you decide to go with the homemade route, its pretty damn simple. I use pushpins normally, so thats why I chose to use them for my hole puncher. I just cut out two round pieces of cardboard, jammed all the pushpins through one cardboard, and then put a layer of super glue on the ass end of each pushpin, then slapped the other piece of cardboard to the back of them. Now normally I like to use more holes than the hole puncher can hold, so I typically push through my foil once with the puncher, pull it out, rotate it ever so slightly and push it in again. This gives me my normal ~60 holes.

I use a plastic 4 tong fork.Takes rougly 10 seconds to do 5 rows down, then i do another colum on either side of the 4 colums from the original holes.Works awesome, cost is like $0.04.
