NorthEastSmoker
Well, for the past few weeks I've been having a hell of a time getting either of my 2 hookahs (MYA QT and Syrian Glyph from hookah-shisha) to smoke good at all.I was getting super thin smoke, and if I took a good drag, it would taste HORRIBLE.. mettalic, burnt shisha, nasty coal, all of the bad tastes one can imagine. If I took a tiny hit, it would taste good, but obviously no good smoke.. This is with thin aluminum foil doubled up, tiny toothpick holes over the whole bowl, AA tobacco, and golden Quicklights.. I had smoked my tobacco with my coals on friends' hookahs in that same time frame, with GREAT results... wtf..I had tried washing my hoses (mya washables), the lemon juice cleaning of bowls and stems, different coal combinations, AND I had acclimated the hell out of my tobacco.. wtf again. So today, I did a single layer of the thin aluminum foil, and 15 or 20 larger holes with a toothpick in the middle of the bowl.. BAM.. holy shit. awesome flavor, thick smoke, zero harshness.. the way hookah was meant to be! So now I'm smoking the MYA QT and listening to Zeppelin, and wishing this would never end!!!!! Sonthert
Tobacco acclimation, it sounds like.
Glottis
I think he said that he already tried acclimating it. So poking less and larger holes is what finally made the smoke taste good?
Sonthert
Yeah, the problem being is the raindance syndrome. If I alter the way I raindance every week, eventually, when winter comes around and it rains, I will think that particular dance was better than the others, except its winter, it rains around here. If the weather is getting worse (the humidity keeps increasing away from the tobacco), the gap keeps getting larger, even though you are acclimating, the tobacco gets worse. When the weather stops, turns around, you may not realize it and then...bam its smoking well again. If it had been sealed, in this specific case, it would have smoked more poorly since it would have had farther to go. If you see what I'm saying...real hard to explain. Use sound technique and your hookah will always smoke as well as could be expected in the situation at hand. That being said, I like foil thats as close to a screen as possible. The design idea of screens is brillant. The fact that I throw the foil away tips the balance over to foil. Large holes, lots of air flow. Well, done, sir! Good smokey, to you.
