Anyone have experience with "Golden Coals"?

Recommended Posts

I have some light experience with Golden brand quicklights. A gent from this forum gave me a bunch about a year ago when he was moving away to the middle east, and had no more need for them. They worked decent enough. They definitely spark a bit more than 3Kings, as in when lighting them, they have a tendancy to explode :) Nothing major of course, but as the lighting agent does its job, corners or chunks bust out. They also gave off a bit of odor, but only while lighting, which the 3Kings seem to do as well. So as long as you wait until they're fully lit, it shouldn't be a problem. So why would your parents care how long/easy it takes to set up your hookah, if you don't mind me asking? :)

they're decent, worked ok for me but for real you should just get natrual coals, they arnt bad setting up you just hold it over a flame for about 5 minutes. they last longer and put off more heat so its better on both parts.

theyre the only thing I use, mainly because they light super fast and theres nothing that detracts from the taste. be warned though....dont light them around...anything flammable..within like 2 feet, they spark like mad, and sometimes youll get a popper and a tiny lil chunk will go up all at once, the infamous "exploding golden", which not unlike napalm, will destroy arm/hand/face/body/room, but after theyre fully lit, youll be ok, hehe.

They were my first charcoal and I thought that they worked very well. But of course, since they were my first, I had nothing to compare them to. I'll be getting some more soon -- I think I remember them burning longer than the Three Kings. As far as them being safe once lit, that's not necessarily true. I've had one spark in the middle of a smoke, and when I looked at the coal it had actually broken in half. I remember someone on the forums saying that something similar happened, except the entire coal just exploded and embers went flying everywhere. That's ultimate disaster right there.I went through a box of 100 without any real incidents though. I plan on trying them again.

Heh, I'm trying to convince my mom to buy a decorative hookah (a.k.a. a nice Mya). She realizes that it's a nice decoration, and she enjoys hookah a bit, but would not want to set it up herself because she sees my brother and I messing with the large propane torch and whatnot. She would probably also be against using the stove to light coals because it makes the kitchen smell like coals / you get coal crap on your hands, etc. Quicklights would be the best option. Hey, as long as they don't explode like those damn nugged style coals we used to use, I'm good.

Hey, if those saggy old priests at my old church could fire up a Three Kings charcoal for their incense, I'm sure your mammy can boot up the hookah herself too. My mom wants to buy a hookah as well... she used to be a cigarette smoker and quit a few years ago. She really misses it, and has really been enjoying smoking hookah with me. The thing is... I believe that smoking hookah is worse for you than cigarettes, so I don't really want my mom smoking it that much, haha... aren't I a good son?

Even if it was the easiest thing in the world to set up, she wouldn't do it often. She would appreciate it more as a cultural-esque decoration / conversation piece. However, it would be nice if she had the ability to set it up so it's not totally for show. She's not a smoker, but she likes to puff on the hookah with us.edit: I keep waiting for my avatar to come back...

I use Golden quicklights as my primary coal.. I've used 3 kings in the past, and prefer the golden's.. they light faster than the 3 kings, and seem to give off less of a flavor to the tobacco..

My friends and I use Goldens almost religiously. Quick light times, a good burn length, and most importantly, shisha flavor isn't compromised! The only thing to really look out for is, as above posters have said, the "exploding coal". Just practice safe lighting and you should be a-ok!

If your mom gets a hookah.. I'm going to cry. That would be so awesome ^_^I wish that when we first started smoking in your backyard your parents would have joined us. My mom thinks that smoking hookah is the devils work... But she knows that she can't stop me, and just accepts it.Keep me posted :)

The last two rolls of Goldens I used were extremely smokey when lit. Rather odd I suppose as this is definately not the norm with them.I never had an exploding Golden... but I didn have one throw off a flame that resembled a jet fighters afterburner....... shot out for about 8" and helf for second or so. was a trip.

Smoke a TON more than they used when lighting.. after the sparkle show was over on the coal, the smoke was gone, no smell, no flavor imparted on the tobacco.. but definitely smokey and more smelley than they used to be when lighting..
