Dropbear
I've smoked out of my new vortex like 4 times now, orange soda tangiers twice, social smokes once and AF another time...each time, I end up with a bad headache or nauseous feeling..am i packing this thing down wrong? is it the quicklight coals im using? is it just me? my friends have smoked from it each time, never had any of the problems I've had. maybe a headache or something after from one or two of em, but for me it got bad each time. i had a headache all day yesterday...it pulls fine, nice smoke clouds and taste and everything, but after an hour or two of smoking it i feel like crap. the only thing i can really think of is that the ashes from the quicklights could be going in the spire in the middle of the bowl and going in(because those damn quicklights ash like crazy), but idk if thats it...any more experienced ppl have an idea? I've never EVER had this issue with much longer sessions from my old regular mya bowl, but I wanna get this vortex working right if I'm doing something wrong. Epoch
I haven't the foggiest idea what would cause the headache increase. Maybe it's just time to change your coals...
Dropbear
gratz on 600 posts lol...uhm idt its the coals tho =/ ive always used these sultan brand ones i have...work 100x better than the 3k quicklights i had. i dont have one of those starters for the natural coals or id be using them..quicklights are just easier with the portable hookah i have nd shouldnt really do that. =/
jorlyfish
I didn't always get headaches from QLs, but I definitely started to after a while. I used to go to a lounge that used QLs and it got to the point where it gave me a headache after a few months of smoking there. Try changing to natural coals if you can and see what happens. If that doesn't help, slow down the puffing (get some oxygen too!) and drink some water or tea while you smoke and see if it helps. I doubt it's the bowl's fault, just can't see why it would cause a change.

Anyway, make sure your instant coals are fully lit before puffing. I prefer using Golden Coals or CH instants as my favorite instant coals. Dropbear
after the first time i keep a water bottle with me lol...idk. i saw a method of packing the bowl with a fork by kinda like putting it against the sides leaving the holes open on the vortex and kinda just packing the shisha down around the outer edges to the bottom of the bowl, but idk if thats the right way to do it...i let the coals light up all the way, but cant this also lead to pulling heat straight from the coal instead of smoke or something? ive thought about this a little lol. im gonna try using the natural coals next time
Epoch
The Vortex always works best when the airholes are clear, so that shouldn't be an issue.

When I started smoking, I loved the quicklites and used em for a month or so, but after that I couldn't go through a session with a massive headache knocking on my door. Bought a coil burner and switched to nats........and the world was beautiful again!

vendetta_revived
You can get an electric coil burner at walgreens for $10-$13. Sorry, don't know about the barbecue.

MichaelLCP
My advice for people that get headaches is this. Make sure you are fully hydrated! Make sure you are drinking water while you are smoking, or at least something for that matter. Also don't smoke on an empty stomach. I don't know about anyone else, but I always feel like crap. Also try to stay away from QL coals unless you have to. Also when using your QL's, make sure they are fully lit before putting them on the bowl. Just my two cents. Dropbear
Thanks, i always make sure they are fully lit for that reason, i know it burns off chemicals until its done lol...i was keeping hydrated, but i smoked out of the vortex last nite with a mix of SS cherry and AF strawberry and it was FANTASTIC. the difference was i used starlight coconut coals, and it was soooo much better. im gonna buy a pack of natural coals online right now...any suggestions? and does anyone know where i can get a large enough wind cover to fit over my vortex? the things huge lol

The only time I've had issues with it is trying to put a short wind cover onto a KM or Nammor hookah, because the ashtray sits so low. http://www.hookah-shisha.com/p-1040-traditional-hookah-wind-cover.html A basic wind screen with a few different sizes. Oh, and Coconaras are great natural coals. Edited June 19, 2011 by Epoch
Nazeli
It's definitely the coals, start switching to cocnaros or luxors...I been smoking at this lounge where they use luxors and they are my favorite now...I'm waiting to finish all my coconaros to get a pack of the luxors they don't turn black! dizzbizz
Coconaras are the best, IMO. AF nats are good and cheap. Also, HJ sells Tangiers sized windcovers which are huge. I have one and it will fit over any bowl I have.
