dont move it inside...you are not breaking any laws and as long as there is no "no smoking" there you have the right to smoke there...its your property...if they come back tell them too bad, you are not breaking the law...they can't do anything, really...too much fear of big brother these days people forget they have rights

I had the cops called on me smoking on campus a few years back. I was as polite as possible and they threatened me with disorderly conduct because I offended somebody by smoking it apparently...I left and contacted the head of the department, got a meeting, explained it, threatened to contact the ACLU, and won, smoked at least twice a week during warm weather in that same spot from there on out

Um, I would have asked them, "So I can't smoke something that is completely legal on my own property?"

I would have been interested in their response to that.

Next time, ask to speak to the chief. Some cops use intimidation and to that, I completely lose all respect for that officer.

even if your not allowed to smoke in your apt. your allowed to smoke out side. If they come back tell them you are within your rights and you are not doing anything illegal. Be polite but firm and if they threaten you ask for their badge numbers and file an harassment complaint with the police dept. Then go back inside lol. BE POLITE!

I wouldn't wait until they come back. A lot of people don't realize that every department head including the Chief of Police are required to attend City Council meeting. And every council meeting has an open invitation for any citizen to address the council and the department heads. So you can approach the microphone, and speak for usually 5-minutes at the most. I'd register a respectful complaint about the incident so you get it on record. Make it clear you have zero problem being approached by the police to prove it's only tobacco, but you won't be harassed on your own property. Next cop that comes around will almost certainly be very, very polite. Because they'll have heard about your appearance before the Chief and council. At which point, you could always invite them to come back on their break and share a bowl. The idea isn't to irritate them but let them know they need to respect your rights as much as you're willing to respect them.

Well my first tip is: don't take it inside. If you want to smoke outside, go ahead. Taking it inside is an indirect admission that you have something to hide.

I've had cops approach me before plenty of times smoking outside my college apartment. They ask what I'm smoking, I explain and usually have some beside me. I offer to take the foil off or let them smoke it to approve or disapprove. They usually just say thanks and have a good night. So if they ask you to take inside, politely ask why and explain that you prefer to smoke outside due to the chances of carpet burns and making your apartment smell. If they try to force you to take it inside,it shows they are just ignorant and on a power trip.

In fact have a few print outs of how hookahs work and how they are used in modern times in a folder and give it to them next time and say "I'm sorry we had a misunderstanding, I hope it won't be a problem in the future."

I've had the same experience as Liquidglass. I just graduated but in college I would smoke outside of my dorm and the cops came on a few occasions and asked what I was smoking. I showed them the tobacco and they were cool about it. They told me that some cops tell people to smoke inside because they dont want to get called back every day by whoever is complaining. Luckily the cops were cool and we actually talked about hookah for a few minutes. If I were you, I would keep smoking outside. You are not doing anything wrong.
