Homemade Quick Lights

Recommended Posts

Okay so I was talking to this friend of mine who says he uses a few drops of alcohol to turn regular charcoal into quick lights. I haven't personally tried it, but according to him, he takes a regular CH brick, sprinkles a few drops of 100 proof vodka on it, lights the vodka which in turn lights the brick. I don't happen to have any vodka in the house at the moment to try it, but I'm thinking if this works could be useful now and then. We all hate quick lights because of the chemicals that are added. but most of keep a few around for when we're not near a stove. If this works it could mean we never again have to buy them, plus alcohol burns off completely without that nitrate aftertaste. Anyone else ever tried this? Or is willing to and report back it works? Not that I don't believe him, but his version of easy, might not be my version of easy.

Ooo, ooo! I have a better idea... Use Golden Canaries, which you can light by stove or lighter, and they have no taste and are great coals for heat management! :P

I personally wouldn't try the vodka thing, but hey, if you works for your friend, then more power to them. I'll stick to my GC's, though. Definitely my version of easy. :)

Oh heck, what's a few drops when you have 5 bottles resting in your cupboard. :)

Okay, so I was forced to try this method today due to an unexpected blackout, and I don't generally keep quicklites. Tried it with 75 proof rum as mentioned, and first, I sprinkled a few drops and then tried, and again after literally soaking the coal in rum.

The alcohol burned in a flash, way too quick to actually burn the coal. Gonna try again sometime with 100 proof vodka.
