Planning Ze Honeymoon

I did some research and found a free one- MyRegistry.com. Signed up, added my paypal account, and created a cash gift fund marked "Our Honeymoon." We're going to put the link for people to go to in the invitations. Thanks so much for the awesome idea, Rani! I don't think we'd have ever thought of it.

Perfect! Don't forget to post the link on the websites including this one where you have strictly on-line friends who, nevertheless, wish you well.

Reporting takes place as a 10-99 but it has to be more than $600 from any one source usually, and it applies in the case of earnings. Some people are using it to do some sneaky stuff, but legitimate gifts in small amounts should not be a problem. And even should something change in the upcoming tax year, and you get a tax bill, you have a year to pay it, and it's certainly going to be a whole lot less than the cost of the cruise!

Iain- no.

As for the myregistry.com and MF thing, Brooke isn't so sure she wants to do it. She kinda just wants to let people do whatever they want, not have a registry at all, which I can understand. I know that with MF you can only withdraw $500 a month to your bank account. Beyond that, I know nothing.

Well, Alaskan cruise is a no-go. Airfare was ridiculous.

So back to square one. Other options we're considering is Las Vegas for 5 nights, which would cost around $800-900 for flight and hotel total. This is no problem. Actually, well within budget (our budget is my tax return pretty much, haha). Another option is rent a cabin in the woods of Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge, which would be around $100 a night. Or a cabin or just hotel (maybe a bed and breakfast?) in Branson, MO. Also, a 4 or 5 day cruise out of New Orleans, which is a 10-hour drive for us. But at this point, I'm kinda turned off from cruises completely...

I'd say go to some where different and new, like CA not Las Vegas (It isn't romantic at all, it just a glorified party town) and if you visit California not to just stay in the Lost Angeles area, though there are a ton of theme parks riddling it and potential to see movie stars and what not. Things such as mementos, food and etc are expensive because they exploit the fact that you are there to do the themeparks, see sights and see potential famous individuals. As well you might find that LA is pretty dirty as hell and not all that great. So I suggest seeing many cities or national forests like The red Woods, Mystery Spot, Yosemite, Big Sur, Catelina Island and etc. Also San Diego is great as well, though we may not have themeparks like Disneyland but we do have nice beaches, many interesting/inexpensive food/places, Coronado Isle, the Zoo parks (The infamous SD regular zoo and Safari Park) that have polar bears, pandas, baby elephants and gorillas (the normal zoo in downtown has the polar bears and pandas), seal beach and etc.

To save on the expenses, I think we are looking to drive somewhere now. I had an idea- SeaWorld Orlando. There's a Best Western Plus just 3 miles away from it, so we could (hopefully) use our points to cover most of the stay. I'm thinking stay four or five nights, see what all SeaWorld has to offer, and maybe check out Universal as well, or even Disney. I'm not sure about Brooke, but I've never been to Universal. Disney I went to when I was 10, but my grandma got food poisoning the second day from room service chicken, so we left early. Brooke went about 5 years ago in high school. So we would probably focus on SeaWorld, and check out the other parks if we have time or there's something that we specifically want to do. Either way, it's a nice Best Western with a big pool and two hot tubs. Has a sandwich/snack bar and a restaurant right there in the lobby. Way I figure it, go to the park during the day (free shuttle service there and back, by the way), and come back to the hotel in the evening and enjoy a nice dip in the pool, relax in the hot tub, grab a bite to eat there if we want. Tons of other restaurants near by as well. Won't have to drive to any of the parks and pay for parking... It just seems like it'd be a good time. And I think we'd end up seeing more animals in SeaWorld than we would have on the Alaskan cruise. Granted, they won't be in their natural habitats, it'd still be awesome. And... they have polar bears. Brooke loves polar bears. So it's a win-win.

So right now, I think we've narrowed it down to three options: Vegas, Orlando, or Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge. Right now Orlando seems most appealing to me personally, but I could honestly be happy with any choice. So I guess it comes down to what she wants to do. Since polar bears would be involved, I see SeaWorld winning.

Go to orlando, not only is it 'warm' the themeparks there are phenomenal.

That's actually what we just discussed- it'll be blazingly hot in Orlando in June. Big deterrent for us.

Now we're considering a NYC trip. Only problem is flight and hotel alone would cost us close to $2k. But we'd get to see a lot of great shows, and the weather shouldn't be as miserable as anywhere in the south.

Providence? :P
Summer up north is really nice. I'd consider other big cities as well.. New York has obvious appeal, but what about Boston, Chicago, etc? You'd be able to do a lot of similar things -- great restaurants, shows, etc. and have it not be as expensive.

What is there to do in Boston and Chicago? I bet if we go to a big city, she'll want it to be NYC, though.

Like I said, lots of good restaurants, museums, shopping, etc. as there are in any big city.
Boston is one of the most historic cities in the country, so there's a lot of American sorts of things to do. Sam Adams brewery tour? http://www.bostonusa.com/visit/bostoneveryday/be/whattodo
